PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Chargers’ Jefferson Arrested

Less than two weeks before a playoff game, San Diego receiver Shawn Jefferson was jailed briefly after being arrested for investigation of drunk driving and gun violations, authorities said.

Jefferson was pulled over Monday night by a San Diego County Sheriff’s deputy responding to a report that shots had been fired in Alpine, a rural community about 30 miles east of San Diego.

Jefferson’s passenger, backup offensive lineman Curtis Whitley, was not charged. Whitley and Jefferson breed horses in Alpine.

Green Bay Packer wide receiver Sterling Sharpe was sent to Indianapolis so another physician could examine him after he suffered a second neck injury in two weeks. Sharpe declined to speculate whether the “stinger” injury suffered in last Saturday’s victory over Tampa Bay would affect his playing status for Saturday’s playoff game against the Detroit Lions.

Charlie Waters resigned as Denver’s defensive coordinator after the Broncos ended the season with the NFL’s worst defense and amid speculation Coach Wade Phillips might be next to leave. Phillips, in the second year of a three-year contract, led the Broncos to a 7-9 record after an 0-4 start this season. Denver was 9-7 in 1993. . . . Tim Bowens, a defensive tackle from Mississippi whom the Miami Dolphins picked with the 20th choice in the first round of the draft, was named Associated Press defensive rookie of the year. . . . . A Tampa, Fla., group made an offer to buy the Buccaneers that is valid until Jan. 9, a trustee for the team said. No details were revealed. . . . The Cincinnati Bengals named Tim Krumrie a defensive line coach. Krumrie, 34, retired Saturday. . . . Cardinal Coach Buddy Ryan said wide receiver Randal Hill, linebacker Wilber Marshall and safety Andre Waters will not be back with the team next season and quarterback Steve Beuerlein and wide receivers Ricky Proehl and Gary Clark will be offered in the expansion draft.
