6 From Area Receive Top State Honor : High school football: Westlake’s Miller and Notre Dame’s Sailer among 30 first-team selections.

Six area high school players were among 30 first-team selections to the 1994 All-State football team compiled by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.

Wide receiver Billy Miller of Westlake, tackle Mark Manskar of Canyon and All-American kicker Chris Sailer of Notre Dame were chosen to the first-team offense. Linebackers Lawrence Larry of Littlerock and punter Ignacio Brache of Village Christian were first-team defense selections. Junior Durell Price of Sylmar, a running back and linebacker, was a first-team multipurpose selection.

Senior tailback Daylon McCutcheon of La Puente Bishop Amat, who rushed for 2,359 yards and scored 33 touchdowns, was chosen Cal-Hi Sports player of the year. McCutcheon, son of former Rams running back Lawrence McCutcheon, led Bishop Amat to a national ranking and a Del Rey League championship. McCutcheon scored four touchdowns in a 28-6 victory over league rival Crespi.

Miller, Price and even Sailer, who booted a state-record 22 field goals in 28 attempts, played major roles this season.

Miller (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) caught 67 passes for 1,057 yards while leading Westlake to a Marmonte League championship and into the Southern Section Division III playoffs. As a running back, Price rushed for 1,936 yards and scored 29 touchdowns as Sylmar went 14-0 and claimed the City Section 4-A Division title.

Sailer, who tied a state record with 33 career field goals, connected on seven of at least 50 yards to help lead Notre Dame to the Division III championship.

Manskar (6-7, 250) and Larry (6-3, 230) are among Southern California’s most-recruited linemen, and Brache, who doubled as a kicker, booted 16 field goals, including a 60-yarder.

Second-team selections included tackle Kane Cullum of Crespi, running back Jerry Brown and defensive back DaShon Polk of Taft, and defensive tackle Caleb Smith of Antelope Valley.

Running back Josh Hawkins of Nordhoff, who rushed for an area-high 2,454 yards and 32 touchdowns, was selected to the all-state medium schools team.

Among the small-schools all-state selections were offensive linemen Matt Phelan of Paraclete and Langston Woodberry of Montclair Prep, defensive tackle Garveia Freeney of Kilpatrick, linebacker Akhil Anderson of Montclair Prep, and defensive backs Ryan Johnson of Oak Park and Darrell Dent of Montclair Prep.

Amanda Selby of Harvard-Westlake was a third-team selection to Cal-Hi’s All-State girls’ volleyball selections.
