PREPS

Kory Minor of Bishop Amat was named national prep football defensive player of the year by USA Today.

Minor, The Times’ San Gabriel Valley lineman of the year, played defensive end and fullback for the Lancers. He had 20 1/2 sacks and led the Lancers to the Southern Section Division I championship game.

Daylon McCutcheon of Bishop Amat, The Times’ San Gabriel Valley back of the year and winner of the The Times’ Glenn Davis Award, was selected to the USA Today first-team as a defensive back.

McCutcheon, who gained 2,359 yards and scored 33 touchdowns, also was selected state player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.

Minor and Pasadena linebacker Lester Towns were also selected first-team All-State by Cal-Hi Sports. Bishop Amat linebacker Ramogi Huma was named to the second team.

San Marino quarterback Dan Loyd was All-State in the medium-sized schools division.

* Brian Butcher of South Pasadena, a senior who led South Pasadena to its second consecutive Southern Section water polo championship, was selected Division III player of the year. Kenny Clements, who led Rowland to the Division IV championship, shared division player of the year honors with James Castle of Wilson.

Craig Bessenger and Brian Raymond of South Pasadena also were named to the Division III first team. Jesus Ontiveros of Alhambra, Adam Roth of Temple City and Dirk Vanderwall of South Pasadena were second-team selections. James Buckingham, Stanley Chung and Shawn Estep of South Pasadena were named to the third team.

Area players selected to the Division IV first team included Tony Grosso, Mike Mineo and Hector Lopez of Rowland, Brian Kunishima of Wilson, Rob Cooper of Charter Oak and Travis Tibbets of Bonita.

Ric Harvey and Brian Kirby of Rowland, Jayson Sandhu and Jesse Newman of Bonita, Joe Casillas of Walnut, Kevin Graham of Wilson, Matt Beucar of Charter Oak and Gage Fisher of Los Altos were selected to the Division IV second team.

Third-team selections included Leo Navarro of Rowland, Mark Amakasu of Bonita, Tim McPheron of Charter Oak, Philip Daniels of Walnut, Jeremy Dobies of Wilson and Gavin Calder of Los Altos.

Jerry Wulf of South Pasadena was selected Division III coach of the year. Sean Herron of Rowland was the Division IV coach of the year.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Prawit Namutawong of East Los Angeles College, a former standout at Bassett High, was selected to the All-American team by the National Soccer Coaches Assn.

Namutawong, a sophomore goalkeeper, helped the Huskies finish second in the state.

COLLEGES

The La Verne University men’s basketball team, averaging 102 points a game, entered the week with a 5-1 record.

The Leopards have been led by guard Cedric Jones and forward Mack Reliford. Jones, a senior from Los Angeles, had 27 points, nine assists and six steals in a 113-79 victory over UC San Diego last week.

Reliford, a senior from Pomona, had 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

* The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team begins play today in a tournament at Cal State San Bernardino.

The Cougars, led by sophomore forward Raymond Tutt, entered the week 9-4. They will play host to a tournament on Tuesday.

* The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team is competing in a tournament at Chico State through Friday.

The Broncos entered the tournament with an 8-2 record. Tyrone Merriweather is averaging 16 points a game for Pomona.

* A 2-K and 5-K run and a 5-K walk that will benefit the Azusa Pacific track program and the Azusa Unified School District’s physical education/athletic program is scheduled for Feb. 4.

Top finishers will receive plaques. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 for children.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Gordon Scott, Pasadena--Scott, a senior forward, scored 18 points as the Bulldogs defeated previously unbeaten Glendora, 56-44, in a nonleague game.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Robin Seabrook-Chandler, Mt. San Antonio College--Seabrook-Chandler, a sophomore, scored 20 points and had eight rebounds in the Mounties’ 56-52 victory over Orange Coast, which was ranked sixth in the state.

Seabrook-Chandler, who was also all-conference in volleyball, helped the Mounties improve to 4-6.

MISCELLANY

Pomona Raceway will be the site of 10 Junior Drag Racing League events beginning in January. The program, which began two years ago, features mini-sized dragsters powered by five-horsepower engines. Drivers range in age from 8 to 17. Information: (818) 914-4761.

* The Foothill-Citrus Baseball Umpires Assn. will have its first meeting Jan. 22 at Walnut High. The organization is seeking members, who earn $46 for working one-man, non-varsity games. The association will provide training in rules. Information: (818) 964-9445.

CALENDAR

The city of Covina is accepting registration for an after-school basketball program for junior high students that will begin play Jan. 9.

Competition will be held at Covina Park Teen Center, Royal Oak Intermediate School and Las Palmas and Sierra Vista junior high schools.

* The Arcadia recreation department is accepting registration for its 1995 adult basketball league, which begins play Jan. 25 and runs through March 29.
