Chatsworth High’s Tucker Will Sign With Master’s

Chatsworth High first baseman Jon Tucker, considered one of the nation’s top high school hitters, said Thursday he will sign with The Master’s College.

“Earlier in September I was recruited by three Division I schools (Miami, Texas A&M; and Washington State) but my grades weren’t good enough and I didn’t think I’d be able to go to a college,” Tucker said. “Then, The Master’s coach called and offered a full ride and it sounded pretty good. It will be easier on my parents if I have a full ride.

“Besides, my family is religious and it’s a Christian school, so I think I’ll fit in real well.”

There is a good chance Tucker will never play college baseball. Baseball America named him the 31st-best high school prospect in the nation, meaning he could be picked high enough in the draft to attract a six-figure signing bonus.

The Antelope Valley Ravens of the independent Golden State Baseball League put the final piece in the puzzle that will allow them to play in 1995 when they reached an agreement to play at Rosamond High.

The Southern Kern Unified School District Board of Trustees voted 4-1 in favor of permitting the Ravens to temporarily use the field at the school.

The Ravens will install 3,000 seats, lights and a sound system at the field, General Manager Larry Thornhill said.

Cornerstone Christian High has named Rob Paramo as baseball coach. Paramo played at Moorpark College in 1982-83 and previously served as an assistant at Ventura College.

Chatsworth High outfielder Ray Daryabigi is academically ineligible and will miss the first two months of the season.

The Spartan Relays, scheduled to be held at Rio Mesa High on Saturday, have been postponed until April 22 because the new latex track is not ready.

The track and infield areas were resurfaced 10 days ago, but humid, overcast conditions prevented them from curing as quickly as expected.

Striping did not start until Wednesday. Thursday’s rains prevented it from being completed and more rain is forecast for today.

The Northridge-Alemany Relays, a local high school meet scheduled for March 11, and the Northridge Invitational college and open meet, set for March 25, have been canceled.

Both meets were held at Cal State Northridge in previous years, but were tentatively moved to Birmingham High when the badly worn Northridge track was deemed unfit for competition.
