PREP ROUNDUP : Villa Park Boys’ Swimmers Perfect in Sonora Relays

Villa Park’s boys’ swimmers swept all seven varsity events--only the second team in the meet’s 25 years to do so--to run away with the Sonora Relays Saturday at Sonora High.

Villa Park scored 365 points to 225 for runner-up Sunny Hills.

Spartan junior Brian Pharris was a member of three winning teams: the 800 freestyle (8:05.41), 400 butterfly (4:00.40) and 400 medley (4:06.68).

At the Villa Park girls’ swim relays:

Santa Margarita wins--Jen Connellan, Christine Connellan, Ginny Campbell and Lisa Henningsen each swam on two winning relays for Santa Margarita, which scored 299 points to 212 for Villa Park.

In the El Segundo baseball tournament:

Brea Olinda 7, Cerritos 3--Ryan Knuth had three hits, three runs batted in and picked up the save for Brea Olinda (1-0).

In the Loara tournament:

El Dorado 5, Santiago 4--Jim Cox’s two-out double in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning run for El Dorado (1-0).

Irvine 3, Villa Park 0--Matt Ward went the distance for Irvine (1-0), striking out seven and walking none. Ethan Gragnano was two for two, both doubles, with an RBI.

Marina 7, Laguna Hills 1--Josh Roberts had a bases-loaded double, a triple and three RBIs, and Justin Lynch struck out four and gave up three hits and an unearned run for Marina (1-0).

San Clemente 4, Huntington Beach 3--San Clemente’s James Anderson went three for four and scored twice.

Sunny Hills 4, Newbury Park 3--Scott Monson went two for three and Josh Hochgesang had two RBIs for Sunny Hills.

Esperanza 4, Mission Viejo 0--Brian Kaylor had two hits and three RBIs for host Esperanza (1-0). Jim Pickel had five strikeouts in four innings, and Brian Snapp struck out four in three innings for a save.

Mater Dei 6, Orange 0--Mike Hessman gave up one hit and struck out six in six innings. John Flynn hit a home run in the fourth for host Mater Dei (1-0).
