SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Winning isn’t the only thing for the boys’ soccer team at La Canada High. Not while there are still records to be broken.

But a victory was enough to solidify its place as one of the most dominating teams in Southern Section history.

The Spartans tied a Southern Section record for fewest goals allowed in a season with a 3-1 victory over Cathedral City in a Division IV championship match Saturday at Gahr High School.

The top-ranked Spartans (25-0) allowed only six goals this season, tying the mark set by Esperanza in 1983-84.

“I’m happy for our players,” La Canada Coach Louis Bilowitz said. “They’ll be able to look back later in life and know they were No. 1 in something. That’s special.”

Senior forward Josh Henderson scored twice and added an assist for the Spartans.

“We were pretty confident that if we played our best, it would be hard for anyone to beat us,” Henderson said. “We wanted to prove we’re the best team ever.”

The Spartans finished the year with 128 goals, one shy of a section record set by Mesrobian in 1982-83.
