Jarron Collins had the ball on a breakaway and only a second or so to decide.

Aw, why not?

Thus, on a thunderous, two-handed dunk with one second to play, the 6-foot-10 sophomore provided a colorful climax to Harvard-Westlake High’s 64-56 victory over La Jolla in a Division III Southern Regional opener of the State basketball playoffs Tuesday night at Harvard-Westlake.

Harvard (28-2) will play Tulare Western on Thursday night in a second-round game at Harvard.

For the Wolverines, who won the Southern Section III-AA Division championship Saturday, it was time to celebrate.

And a throng of spectators donned red T-shirts advertising the championship.

After the dunk, Collins jogged off the court with a grin from ear to ear.

“I saw a couple of my friends walking out of the gym as the game was ending and I said, ‘Wait a second,’ ” Collins said. “I wanted to show them.”

Collins had 20 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Twin Jason Collins added 25 points and 12 rebounds.

But it was Jarron who scored 11 third-quarter points to sustain Harvard’s momentum while the Vikings (18-10) staged a rally.

In the fourth quarter, the twins ignited the crowd when Jarron dribbled behind his back, drove down the lane and fed Jason for a two-handed dunk.

Said Harvard Coach Greg Hilliard: “Every night they come up with something.”

Seth Newsome scored 21 points for La Jolla, including four three-point baskets.
