BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING 1995: PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : MISSION VIEJO

Share

Coach: Mike Pelton (20th year).

1994: 12-0, 5-0 in the South Coast League. Won its 16th Division I championship.

Key returners: James Davidson, So.; Ahmad Filsoof, Sr.; Brandon Hjie, Jr.; Karl Hyross, Jr.; Mike Ronguillo, Jr.; Russell Rowlands, Sr.; Ryan Wood, Sr.

Key newcomers: Agustin Guzman, Jr.; Bart Kiziercwski, Jr.; Goh Phuang, Jr.

Outlook: No one will touch Mission Viejo this year. There’s just too much talent and depth. Like Woodbridge, the Diablos lost some big guns such as Bart Sikora and Brad Kaup. But unlike the Warriors, Mission Viejo has others as good or better to step up. Polish swimmer Kiziercwski, a junior, will pick up the Derya Buyukuncu (Michigan) mantle. Also, Filsoof and Hyross will offer some fast times and will be intricate to the success of the relay teams, as will Rowlands. The Diablos aren’t loaded with breaststrokers. “This is one of the best boys’ teams I’ve had in years,” Pelton said. That is quite some statement since Pelton’s teams have only lost four of 287 meets.
