PREP NOTES : Villa Park Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Coaches Resign

Villa Park boys’ basketball Coach Steve Harris and girls’ Coach Tim Bynon have resigned, Athletic Director Frank Becker said Friday.

Harris, a third-year coach, helped the Spartans (13-12) reach the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs this season after finishing 3-20 last season. The Spartans lost to Inglewood, 64-47, in the first round.

“He wanted to explore different career opportunities, “ Becker said.

Bynon resigned after one season as an interim coach but will remain as an assistant. The Spartans finished 13-11 this season and lost to El Dorado, 67-30, in the first round of the Division II-A playoffs.

Tustin’s Doug Gottlieb has been selected to play in the 1995 Magic’s Roundball Classic on April 9 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Gottlieb, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, averaged 19.3 points and 9.5 assists. Tustin finished 28-3 and was runner-up in Southern Section Division II.

Whittier Christian Athletic Director Tom Caffrey will not have his contract renewed, said Tim Kurtanuck, the school’s director of admissions.

“It wasn’t because of any misconduct or anything of that nature,” Kurtanuck said. “We’re having cutbacks for budgetary reasons.”

Caffrey has been athletic director for 23 years and also coached football and softball.

The first Orange County All-Star Basketball Tournament has change its format. The tournament, which will be held March 31 and April 2 at the Bren Center, will have only two girls’ teams (North and South).

There will be four boys’ teams (North, South, East and West), but teams will play only one game instead of two.

Lisa Ravensberg and Kristin Moro have signed letters of intent to play volleyball at UC San Diego. Ravensberg, a 6-foot middle blocker from Laguna Beach High, and Moro, an outside hitter for Fountain Valley High, were named to the All-Southern Section first team last season.
