COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Western Oregon Roughs Up SCC’s Borders

Ila Borders continues to struggle this season. Wednesday, she gave up five runs in 2 2/3 innings in Southern California College’s 6-1 loss to Western Oregon.

The sophomore left-hander is 0-5 for the Vanguards (7-19). Borders has an earned-run average of 8.80 in 30 2/3 innings. Last season, she was 2-4 with a 2.92 ERA.

Starter Bill Knowland and reliever James Beam limited SCC to three hits. Ryan Seidel had a triple and scored the Vanguards’ only run.

Borders allowed seven hits and one walk and didn’t record a strikeout before Kevin Withers relieved her in the third inning.

In another nonconference game:

Concordia 6, La Verne 3--Brandon Sparks allowed three runs and seven hits, striking out nine in the complete-game victory for host Concordia (12-12). Chris Wiggins had a triple, home run and three RBIs for Concordia. La Verne is 16-7.

Cal State Fullerton Pony-Louisville Slugger softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 2, Georgia State 0--Senetha Thomas doubled and scored on Julie Williams’ single, breaking a scoreless tie in the sixth inning for the Titans (15-6).

Heidi Robertson added an RBI single. Brandi Isgar (7-1) allowed seven hits in five innings.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 7-7, Carleton (Minn.) 0-1 (first game 5 innings, mercy rule)--Pitcher Christy Guidorizzi gave up one hit and struck out 12 batters in a five-inning shutout for Chapman (16-2); teammate Lisa Cancilla was two for three, with a double and a triple, bringing in three RBIs.

In the second game, left fielder Jessamine Maiben hit her first home run of the year, a two-run blast in the sixth inning. Maiben finished the game four for five, with four RBIs, and scored four times for Chapman (17-2).
