PREP ROUNDUP : Pate Wins Twice as Irvine Beats Newport Harbor

John Pate was a double winner, taking first in the 200 (23.2 seconds) and long jump (19 feet) for Irvine, which defeated Newport Harbor, 91-45, in its Sea View League boys’ track and field opener Thursday.

Phil Oh also was a double winner for the Vaqueros (3-1, 1-0), winning the 400 (51.8) and 300 hurdles (41.7).

In girls’ Sea View League track:

Newport Harbor 102, Irvine 16--Sarah Hawkins won the 100 in 13.7 seconds, and 400 (1:03.7) for Newport Harbor, and teammate Mary Clayton not only ran--winning the 100 hurdles in 16.5 seconds--but also jumped, taking the long jump in 15-5, and the triple jump, in 34 feet.

In Garden Grove League golf:

Whittier Christian 218, Pacifica 252--Kevin Seals was the medalist for Whittier Christian (4-2, 1-0) with a five-over-par 40, at La Mirada.

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Estancia 188, Laguna Hills 212--Junior Peter Krutzik medaled with a par 35, and teammates Alex Lassen, Mike Perry and Andy Thomson came in under 40 for Estancia in a Pacific Coast League golf match.

In South Coast League gymnastics:

Brea Olinda 167.1, San Clemente 148.5--Erica Castillo, who won the all-around title with 36.5 points for Brea Olinda (2-0), took first in every event including vault (8.7), bars (9.2), beam (9.1) and floor exercise (9.5). Michelle Iverson was the top finisher for San Clemente (0-2) with an all-around score of 33.5 points.

In South Coast League boys’ swimming:

Trabuco Hills 100, Mater Dei 69--Marcel Widarto won the 200 freestyle (1:54.74) and 100 butterfly (1:00.61) for Trabuco Hills (2-1, 1-0). Steven McLeod won the 100 backstroke (59.46) and 500 freestyle (4:51.29) for the Mustangs.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Woodbridge 12, Mission Viejo 6--In singles, Jonny Biorkman and Yoshi Suzuki each swept their sets for No. 5 Woodbridge (6-1). Biorkman finished, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, and Suzuki won, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2. The seventh-ranked Diablos are 4-3.
