TINO ARCHULETA 103 pounds Calvary Chapel, Fr. Few freshmen reach the State tournament. Archuleta not only made it, but nearly placed in the consolation round. Finished eighth at the Masters and first at the Division I finals.

BURT PIERSON 112 pounds Calvary Chapel, So. Made his mark midway through the season when he took fifth at Five Counties. He finished second at the Division I finals, sixth at Masters and came close to placing at State.

SADIE MORALES 119 pounds Santa Ana, Jr. The Saints finished runner-up to Atascadero in the Division III team championships, and Morales turned out to be a bright spot. Was second at the Division III finals and sixth at State.

JOE CALAVITTA 125 pounds Calvary Chapel, So. Many thought Calavitta, the Division I and Masters champion, would continue his run at the State, but he finished third, losing, 8-10, to eventual champion Tony Gomez of San Jose Independence.

JOE REILLY 130 pounds Buena Park, Jr. In the early part of the season, Reilly was struggling, but came on strong in the second half to take third at the Division II finals, sixth at Masters and just missed placing at State.

CHRIS MARQUEZ 135 pounds Katella, Sr. Though no 135-pound county wrestler made it to State finals this year, Marquez was clearly the leader of the field. Finished third at the Division III finals and just missing placing at Masters.

JEFF GRECO 140 pounds Laguna Hills, Sr. Greco said at the beginning of the season he hoped to make it to the State finals, and he did. Finished eighth at State, fifth at Masters and second in the Division III finals.

RICHARD MEZA 145 pounds Loara, Jr. Overshadowed by Laguna Hills’ Mike Greco most of the season, Meza proved he was the man at 145, winning the Southern Section Division II title, the Masters title and finishing fifth at State.

JOSH HOLIDAY 152 pounds Calvary Chapel, Sr. Holiday was simply the best. Ranked No. 1 in the state and the nation at 152, he has lost only one match in two years. Defended his Division I, Masters and State titles with ease.

ED MOSLEY 160 pounds Calvary Chapel, Sr. Mosley dominated his weight class, winning at Division I and Masters titles. Had one of the most dramatic matches in the State final, beating Jason Webster, 8-6 in overtime, to defend his title.

MIKE AGUIRRE 171 pounds Calvary Chapel, Sr. Aguirre’s main opponent at State was the flu. The bug won out, spoiling for him what was otherwise a fantastic season. Finished first at the Division I finals and second at Masters.

MATT VAN HOOK 189 pounds Calvary Chapel, Sr. One wonders how far Van Hook could have gone if he didn’t have a shoulder injury that kept him out part of the season. Finished seventh at State, third at Masters and first at the Division I finals.

JIM AMBRIZ Heavyweight Saddleback, Sr. Armed with his Megadeth and Black Sabbath tunes for inspiration, Ambriz terrorized his opponents. Didn’t place at State, but took third at Masters and first at the Division III finals.

JOHN AZEVEDO Coach Calvary Chapel Azevedo’s “Church Boyz” just missed their third consecutive State title. His tireless dedication to the sport and his kids, combined with his coaching knowledge, rank him among the best.

HWT Finished second at Division III finals, sixth at Masters.
