THE PREPS : ROUNDUP : Tustin Wins Volleyball Tournament

Tustin won a boys’ volleyball tournament for the second consecutive week with a 15-12, 15-7 victory over Mater Dei in the final of the Foothill Invitational on Saturday.

The Tillers, who won the Division II title at the Orange County Championships last weekend, were led by Donnie Rafter with 17 kills and Curtis Jackson with 15.

In the Loara baseball tournament:

Villa Park 5, Santiago 4--Christian Cortez went two for three with a triple, his fourth of the season for Santiago (3-4) in a consolation game.

In Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 5, Laguna Beach 2--Jeff Munsell went the distance with three strikeouts and hit a home run for visiting Aliso Niguel (6-2, 2-1), which scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie.

In Sunset League baseball:

Esperanza 4, Los Alamitos 3--Brian Snapp pitched a three-hitter, striking out eight for visiting Esperanza (2-1 in league). Catcher Chris Stretch had a two-run double in the fifth inning.

In nonleague baseball:

Saddleback 5, Foothill 1--The Roadrunners (4-5) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Hector Espino came in relief in the third inning to pick up his first victory of the season. Foothill is 3-4-1.

In Academy League softball:

Connelly 15, Capistrano Valley Christian 6--Senior Shannon Boardman had a triple and three runs batted in for host Connelly (5-1, 1-0), which scored 11 runs in the fifth inning.

In the Covina Charter Oaks softball tournament:

La Habra 2, Bishop Amat 0--La Habra turned two double plays behind pitcher Cristy Turner, who pitched a two-hitter. Michelle Archibeque was three for three with a run scored for the Highlanders (6-0).

Katella 9, Duarte 0 (5, mercy)--Julie Burnsed and Cynthia Castillo each went two for three with a run scored for Katella (5-6).

In the Garden Grove tournament:

San Clemente 1, La Mirada 0--Stephanie Swenson pitched a shutout in the championship game for San Clemente (9-1). La Mirada is 6-3.

Garden Grove 3, Dana Hills 2 (8)--Kathy Moore pitched a no-hitter and hit a triple to lead Garden Grove in the third-place game.

La Mirada 1, Dana Hills 0--Beccy Gordon took the loss despite giving up only one run on four hits for Dana Hills.

San Clemente 6, Garden Grove 3--Heather Hollis was two for three to lead San Clemente in the championship semifinals.

Rancho Alamitos 4, University 2--In a consolation game, Mandy Bouchard pitched a four-hitter and Alex Villa had two RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (2-9).

Los Alamitos 8, University 1--Amanda Peterson and Dana Olmstead each went two for three to lead Los Alamitos (9-2) in a consolation round game. Olmstead also pitched a one-hitter.

Western 6, Rancho Alamitos 0--Jamie Jones pitched a shutout to lead Western in a consolation game.

La Quinta 6, Arcadia 5--Vanessa Borboa went two for three with two RBIs and pitched a five-hitter for La Quinta (4-2-1) in a consolation game.

Tustin 7, Mater Dei 6--Janna Needham’s pinch-hit two-run single provided the winning runs for Tustin (5-3) in the consolation championship.

In nonleague softball:

El Toro 2-0, Trabuco Hills 1-4--Kim Martin went two for four, scored the tying run in the top of the seventh and drove in the winning run with a single in the eighth for El Toro in the first game. In the second game, Vanessa Saavedra had five strikeouts in a complete game to give Trabuco Hills (6-4) the split.

In nonleague softball:

Foothill 4, Upland 0--Marie Gieron pitched a two-hit shutout to improve her record to 6-0. Gieron was also two for three with an RBI for Foothill (8-0).

Mission Viejo 7-1, Aliso Niguel 6-7--In the first game, Danelle Behnken singled home Brianne Ford to cap Mission Viejo’s three-run seventh inning. Jodee Favello was three for four with a double and triple and Treva Whitaker added three hits.

In the second game, Nicole Franko went three for three and Tami Silva was three for four to lead Aliso Niguel.
