HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Walk Steals Perfect Game From Fox

Kristi Fox pitched her second no-hitter of the week and collected two victories as Newbury Park High swept Hoover, 7-3 and 5-0, in a softball doubleheader Saturday at Newbury Park.

Fox (4-0), who joined the Panthers last week after playing on Newbury Park’s basketball team, allowed one fifth-inning walk in the second game. In the first game Fox went five innings, giving up two hits.

Christine Arguijo had five hits for the Panthers (5-1) and drove in two runs. Melissa Brecht had two runs batted in to spark a four-run third inning in the first game.

Alemany 2, Redondo 1--Sophi Contreraz (10-1) was named co-most valuable player after pitching a complete game for Alemany in the final of the Redondo tournament. Melissa Piombetti doubled to score Tiffany Cursio with the winning run.

La Canada 7-9, Glendale 0-0--Lindsay Parker (5-1) allowed one hit--a fourth-inning bunt single by Tara Allender in the second game--in 14 innings of work as the host Spartans (6-1) swept a nonleague doubleheader. Parker struck out 15 in each game.

La Reina 6-1, Royal 5-3--Kristy Tomsen had three hits, including a home run, for the Highlanders (3-5) in the second game of a nonleague doubleheader at La Reina. Kelly Osbourne had two doubles in the first game for La Reina (4-5).

BASEBALL

Quartz Hill 7-4, Canyon 0-3--Sophomore Mark Madsen threw his second shutout in as many starts for the Rebels in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader at Quartz Hill. Darrell Hussman was four for five and drove in four runs for the Rebels (6-0).

Kyle Goss hit his third home run in the first game and picked up the save in the second.

Hesperia 5-5, Antelope Valley 1-4--The Antelopes (2-7) gave up no earned runs but committed 10 errors in a nonleague doubleheader at Antelope Valley.

Faith Baptist 12-5, Templeton 0-6--Judd Granzow (3-1) threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in the first game.

L.A. Baptist 14, Brentwood 3--John Wilson threw a three-hitter in the championship game and was named most valuable player of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Seth Barkley added two hits and two RBIs for the Knights (6-1).

Bell-Jeff 10, Whitney 8--David Quintero doubled and homered to give the Guards (4-4) third place in the L.A. Baptist tournament.

St. Genevieve 8, Ontario Christian 1--Vince Pisano threw a four-hitter, hit a double and had two RBIs to lead the Valiants (2-5) to an L.A. Baptist tournament victory.

Camarillo 14, Taft 5--The Scorpions (6-3) exploded for eight runs in the fifth behind two doubles from Matt Buttell in a nonleague game at Camarillo. Scott Volan, Mike Moler and Rodell Desemparo each added two hits.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Campbell Hall d. Oxnard 15-3, 15-4; d. Verdugo Hills 15-0, 15-1; d. Oxnard 15-4, 15-5; d. Notre Dame, 15-11; d. Simi Valley, 15-6; d. Saugus, 15-10--Eric Hassan of Campbell Hall had 92 kills and was named the most valuable player of the Saugus tournament. Campbell Hall won the tournament despite being the only Division III team.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Santa Barbara Easter Relays--Amy Skieresz of Agoura High was a double winner, setting a meet record of 10:03.22 in the 3,000 meters after turning in a 4.44.80 1,500 meters.

Glendale’s Rhaina Echols placed third in both races, with a 5:07.63 mark in the 1500 and an 11:07.08 3,000. Kristin Hawking of Simi Valley was second in the 1,500 in 5:02.59, while Molly Lawrence of Righetti was second in the 3,000 at 10:50.47.

Newbury Park’s Dawn Anderson was also a double winner with a 116-01 effort in the discus, backed up by a 39-9 1/4 shotput.

BOYS’ TRACK

Santa Barbara Easter Relays--Ramsey Jay of Ventura High won the 100 meters in 10.94 seconds, and Aaron Davis leaped 21-02 1/2 to win the long jump.
