SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jess Quiroz felt uneasy before the match.

It could have been the Vanilla Ice music blaring over the public address system.

Or the almost surreal din of the Alemany Dome.

In truth, however, Quiroz was worried most about his Harvard-Westlake High boys’ volleyball team, which had not played a match in two weeks thanks to Spring Break.

The Wolverines didn’t put their coach completely at ease, but they defeated Alemany, 15-13, 9-15, 15-12, 9-15, 15-5 in a Mission League match Tuesday night.

Harvard-Westlake held off the pesky Indians long enough to emerge from the raucous Dome with a victory.

“I’m happy we’re out of here in one piece,” Quiroz said.

“I knew this was going to be a tough one. We haven’t done much lately and are in a different mode--spring break mode.”

Sun tans and unopened textbooks aside, the Wolverines (7-2, 5-1) may have also been guilty of overconfidence.

They handled Alemany (4-4, 2-3) with comparative ease the first time the teams met.

“We definitely came in here thinking it would be easy,” hitter Rick Rauth said.

They found out very quickly it wouldn’t be so simple.

Alemany played a scrappy game defensively, digging and scooping several offerings from the Wolverines’ offense.

The Indians even countered with some offense of their own.

Outside hitters David Kaminsky (19 kills) and Darin Bell (15 kills) did some impressive point-scoring that incited the crowd.

But the Wolverines’ offense was stronger, more sustained and, in the end, better.

Rauth (22 kills) and Trevor Julian (20 kills) found some holes in the Indians’ defense and combined for 10 kills in the fifth game.

Harvard-Westlake’s attack was ultimately too much.

“It wears on you and tears you down little by little,” Alemany Coach Jamie Quaglino said.

On the horizon for the Wolverines are matches against Mira Costa and league rival Loyola, both ranked among the top five Division I teams in California.
