The Ventura High boys and the Buena girls showed why the sport is called track and field in a Channel League meet at Buena High on Wednesday.

Both teams were given all they could handle by their cross-town rivals in the track events, but each posted comfortable margins of victory by dominating the proceedings on the field.

Ventura, powered by a 31-point advantage in the field events, defeated Buena, 77-50, in the boys’ meet.

Buena won the girls’ meet, 81-46, aided by a 34-11 advantage in the field.

Ramsey Jay won the 100 (10.9 seconds), 200 (21.9) and 400 (48.9) meters for Ventura, and anchored the Cougars’ victorious 1,600 relay team (3 minutes 37.8 seconds). But it was 1-2 finishes in the high jump, long jump, triple jump and shotput which proved decisive for the three-time defending league champions.

With the first three individuals in each event awarded points on a 5-3-1 basis, Ventura (6-0, 5-0) compiled a 32-4 advantage in those events to go along with a 1-3 finish in the discus.

“I thought they had a chance to finish second in the long jump, but other than that, the field events went pretty much how I thought they would,” Ventura Coach Hudson Scoggins said. “I thought we could go 1-2 in most of the field events and we did.”

Trailing, 16-7, after three events, Ventura roared to a 43-25 lead after eight, but Buena narrowed its deficit to 43-34 by sweeping the 110-meter high hurdles.

That was as close as the Bulldogs (5-1, 4-1) got, however, as the Cougars won the next four events to take a 71-42 lead.

Hasita Sutton and Brian Fasulo, who had finished second and first in the shotput earlier in the meet, placed first and third in the discus with throws of 151 feet 4 inches and 137-8.

Jay led a 1-3 finish in the 200, and that was followed by 1-2 Cougar finishes in the long jump and high jump.

Jemal Young and Aaron Davis placed first and second in the triple jump with marks of 44-10 and 42-2 after finishing second (20-4 3/4) and first (21-5) in the long jump earlier.

Like Jay, Ventura sophomore Nicole Campbell won the 100, 200 and 400, and anchored the Cougars to victory in the 1,600 relay in the girls’ meet. But Buena’s superior depth won out as the Bulldogs (6-0, 5-0) edged closer to winning their second consecutive league title.

“We just had more horses than they did,” Buena Coach Steve Blum said. “I figured we’d win by 40 or 50 points and that’s pretty much what we did.”

Campbell, third in the 800 at last year’s Southern Section Division II championships, timed 12.8 in the 100, 26.3 in the 200 and 59.4 in the 400. Teammate Maggie Dwire won the 800 in 2:24.9 and Alyson MacIntosh was victorious in the 1,600 (5:29.0) and 3,200 (11:43.0), but Buena was second and third in those events.

The Bulldogs swept the 100 high hurdles, 300 lows, high jump and triple jump.

Stacy Hebert, sixth in the 300 lows in last year’s State championships, won that event in 45.5 and the 100 highs in 15.9.

Rene McCurtis won the long jump (15-4 1/2) and triple jump (32-8) for Buena.
