COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Defeats Riverside to Remain in First Place

Cypress maintained its percentage-point lead over Rancho Santiago for first place in the Orange Empire Conference baseball race by defeating Riverside, 8-4, Thursday at Cypress.

Freshman right hander Mike Cosgrove pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits, all singles, striking out three and walking three for the Chargers (23-7-1, 10-5).

Cypress catcher David Trentine reached safely in five plate appearances. He was three for three with two doubles, two walks and two runs batted in.

Brooks Morris went two for four with one RBI for the Chargers.

In other conference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 7, Golden West 0--Brian Martineau (6-1) pitched a five-hit shutout as Rancho Santiago remained only percentage points behind first-place Cypress. Martineau struck out nine.

The Dons (23-8, 11-6) scored four runs in the first inning. Kyle Evans hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

Saddleback 5, Orange Coast 4 (11)--Saddleback’s Jose Gonzalez singled in the tying run in the ninth and later beat out a double play as Sam Voita scored the winning run with two out in the 11th. Gonzalez was three for six with two RBIs and Ace Bedich had a two-run double in the fifth for the Gauchos (14-13, 7-8).

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Riverside 382, Cypress 393, Orange Coast 398--Brian Ricketts shot par 69 at Mesa Verde for Cypress.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 9, Fullerton 0--David McMahon had 19 aces in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles for host Saddleback (17-0, 12-0), which won the conference championship. The conference tournament begins April 18 at Irvine Valley.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Golden West 9, Cypress 0--Heather Keller swept, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Golden West. Teammate Luila Ryan also swept, 6-0, 6-0.

Orange Coast 6, El Camino 3--Tempa Rainey defeated American Zamarrom, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Orange Coast improved to 11-3, 6-2.
