BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Laguna Hills Sneaks Past El Modena
Cesar Reyes reached base on an error to start the eighth inning and scored on a wild pitch to give Laguna Hills a 4-3 first-round victory over El Modena in the Pride of the Coast tournament Saturday at Corona del Mar High.
Tony Milo, who was two for four with a run scored, pitched the eighth to earn the victory for the Hawks (10-3).
In other Pride of the Coast games:
Century 9, Victor Valley 2--Freddy Mendez (1-0) pitched a complete game and Art Tapia was three for four with a run batted in for Century (3-10-1).
Estancia 4, Bolsa Grande 3 (9)--A two-out error on Tim Schiefelbein’s ground ball scored Joe Herman to lift Estancia (6-7).
Scott Usher (1-1) struck out six and retired 15 of the last 17 batters he faced for the victory.
Estancia will play Santa Margarita at 9 a.m. Monday at Estancia High.
Newport Harbor 3, Brethren Christian 2--Joe Urban hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to lead Newport Harbor (5-8). Scott Sandstrom scored earlier in the inning to tie the score.
Newport Harbor will play host to Orange Lutheran at 11 a.m. Monday.
Orange Lutheran 10, Los Amigos 3--Adam Cavaness was three for four for Orange Lutheran.
Santa Margarita 6, Santa Monica 0--Mike Penney had two doubles and a home run and Justin Parker and Chris Tessman combined on a shutout for Santa Margarita (8-6).
In the Carlsbad tournament:
San Clemente 16, Carlsbad 7--Jason Hylland had a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored for visiting San Clemente (8-6).
The Tritons play Westminster at 9 a.m. Monday at Carlsbad High.
In the Santa Ana Easter tournament:
Buena Park 6, Villa Park 2--Buena Park scored four runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Cesar Carrillo’s two-run home run.
Garden Grove 8, Brea Olinda 6--Kevin Loken was one for three with a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer and pitched the final two innings to earn his second save for Garden Grove (6-7).
Orange 8, Marshall (Va.) 5--Eric Roden had three hits, including a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored for Orange (8-5).
Orange will play Mission Viejo in the second round at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Rancho Santiago.
Pacifica 6, Foothill 4--Shaun Larkin was three for four with three RBIs and Chris Ridel earned his third victory without a loss for Pacifica (8-6).
Santa Ana Valley 8, Santiago 1--Robert Serrano had two hits and two RBIs and struck out eight for host Santa Ana Valley (7-6).
The Falcons play host to Diamond Bar in the second round at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Mission Viejo 4, Saddleback 3 (8)--Greg Carr scored from second base on a throwing error to give Mission Viejo the victory.
