COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal Lutheran Bounces Back to Earn Split

Jesse Ottele slugged a three-run home run to cap a seven-run first inning that helped the Cal Lutheran baseball team defeat Claremont, 12-4, in the second game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Claremont (10-16, 6-9) won the first game, 6-5, pushing across two unearned runs in the ninth inning.

John Becker hit his seventh homer of the season and 21st of his career for Cal Lutheran (17-9, 9-6) in the first game, moving him within three of all-time leader Dan Wets, who hit 24 homers from 1989-1991.

Moorpark 3, Oxnard 2--Alex Alvarenza’s hit broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning and gave the Raiders (22-9, 12-5) the victory in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.

Aaron Whitley, Ryan Briggs and Jason Adamson each had two hits for Moorpark, which led, 2-0, entering the ninth.

Glendale 8, Canyons 7--Steve Mikesell doubled home the winning run in the top of the 11th inning of a WSC game at Canyons.

Mikesell had three hits for the Vaqueros.

Chris Tashima and Jeff Brown each had three hits for Canyons (14-18, 9-8), which scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

Ventura 14, Santa Barbara 1--Brandon Knight set a school record with his 10th complete game of the season for the Pirates in a WSC North Division game at Ventura.

Knight (10-2) threw a four-hitter with eight walks and nine strikeouts. He also had four hits and drove in three runs for Ventura (16-10-1, 10-7).

Johnny Olivares and Joseph Gauregui each added three hits for Ventura.

Brook Harris had two hits for Santa Barbara (9-20, 5-12).

Mission 5, Valley 1--Jerry Delgado pitched six innings and scattered three hits for Mission in a WSC game at Valley.

Steve Zorn had two hits for Valley (7-19-2, 4-12-1).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge d. USC, 15-11, 15-11, 15-6--Chad Strickland had 20 kills and eight blocks and Oliver Heitmann added 16 kills with only one error for the Matadors in the consolation match of the UCLA Volleyball Classic.

Chris Gill had 15 kills and Jon Baer came off the bench to add nine for Northridge (16-8).

Chris Guigliano had 22 kills for the Trojans (9-11).

SOFTBALL

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4, Cal Lutheran 2--Tracy Little had two hits and scored a first-inning run for the Regals (20-9) in the quarterfinals of the UC San Diego tournament.

Heidi Stevens (9-5) allowed three hits, all of them in the fifth inning, as Claremont scored three runs to rebound from a 2-1 deficit.
