ROUNDUP : Persell Is Perfect for Montclair

Junior third baseman Josh Persell powered Montclair Prep to a 9-5 victory over Franklin Tuesday in a third-round game of the Birmingham tournament.

Persell, who entered the week with a .312 batting average, was four for four with a home run and three doubles. He had five runs batted in. Two of his hits were ground-rule doubles that bounced over the fence. Persell’s home run went to straightaway center field and came with two men aboard in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Mounties (9-4) leading, 6-5.

Birmingham 10, Culver City 9--A single by Jimmy Uline scored Mike Darnell with the winning run with two out in the seventh inning to cap a seven-run rally for the host Braves (10-6) in pool play of the Birmingham tournament.

Birmingham advances to the Blue Division final against Paraclete today at 3 p.m.

Sophomore Joey May, brought up from the junior varsity for the tournament, threw two hitless innings and Fecundo Barrera drove in two runs for Birmingham.

El Camino Real 5, Hawthorne 4--The Conquistadores (10-5-1) advanced after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh in a Birmingham tournament game. Nick Lombard lined an 0-2 pitch over the right fielder’s head with two out to score Marvin Jones from second base. Jones, who was two for three with three RBIs, had singled in two runs to tie the game. Matt Cowie added three hits for El Camino Real.

University 10, San Fernando 7--Gonzalo Gonzalez had two hits and drove in two runs, and Carlos Jimenez and Adolfo Salcido each added two hits and an RBI for the Tigers (8-8) in Birmingham tournament pool play at San Fernando.

Cleveland 9, Van Nuys 0--Jared Mills (3-2) pitched a three-hitter, struck out five and walked three in a pool-play game of the Birmingham tournament at Cleveland.

Mills also had two hits and an RBI for the Cavaliers (4-10).

Greg Walter and Chris Vasquez each had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for Cleveland.

Paraclete 11, Grant 2--Robbie Wood scored two runs, had three hits and two RBIs and Dan O’Gara added two doubles and three RBIs as eight Spirit starters collected two or more hits in a Birmingham tournament pool play game at Grant. Matt Bunker (1-1) scattered six hits for the Spirit (8-7).

Channel Islands 7, Quartz Hill 6--Jared Krehbiel’s sacrifice fly with nobody out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh dealt Quartz Hill (11-1) its first loss and sent the Raiders into the semifinals of the Coachella Valley tournament against Saugus. Krehbiel had two hits and two RBIs. Armando Magallanes doubled, homered and drove in four runs. Channel Islands is 6-9.

Royal 17, Santa Barbara 8--Brent Egan had four hits for the visiting Highlanders (10-5) in a Santa Barbara tournament pool play game. Royal catcher Ben Lemos added three hits and Kevin Mellinger had three RBIs. Matt Pitstick had four sacrifice flies.

Rio Mesa 4, Palm Desert 3--Eric Flores, Steve Arneson and Manuel Chavira each had two hits and Dan Martinez pitched a six-hitter, leading the Spartans (9-4) in a Santa Barbara tournament pool play game at Rio Mesa. Palm Desert (12-1) is the eighth-ranked team in the Southern Section in Division III.

Ventura 4, Santa Paula 2--Robert Verstraeten struck out 10 and did not give up an earned run in pool play of the Ventura tournament. Shawn Wenger had two hits, including a double, for Ventura (11-4).

Hart 6, Bella Vista 0--Luis Sanchez and Mike Bland each homered for the Indians in a Cordova tournament pool-play game in Sacramento. Eric Horvat had two hits, including a double.

Crescenta Valley 3, Leuzinger 1--Natt Putra pitched a five-hitter, striking out six and walking none, for the Falcons (10-3) in a Babe Herman tournament consolation-bracket game at Stengel Field. Jesse Daggett doubled for Crescenta Valley, which had four of its five hits during a three-run third inning.

St. Francis 9, Glendale 1--Mike Velazquez had three hits, including a grand slam and five RBIs for the Golden Knights (9-6) in a consolation-bracket game of the Babe Herman tournament at Hoover. Joe Baldino pitched a five-hitter for St. Francis, striking out eight. Baldino also had a triple.

Phil Onsaga led Glendale with three hits, including two doubles.

Garfield 7, Harvard-Westlake 3--The Wolverines (0-12) took a 3-2 lead into the seventh, but the Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the inning to win the pool-play game of the RBI tournament at USC. Lew Roberts had three hits, including two triples, and scored two runs and Andy Gadt added two hits, a stolen base and an RBI for the Wolverines.

Village Christian 8, Santa Ynez 4--David Swanson pitched his fourth complete game to lift the Crusaders to a quarterfinal victory in the Santa Ynez tournament.

Swanson (5-0) overcame a rocky start as Santa Ynez scored three runs on four hits. He has pitched 17 innings in seven days.

Mike Wertz had two doubles and two RBIs for Village Christian (12-1).

Bell-Jeff 4, St. Genevieve 1--Josh Readman had three hits and scored three times and John Pawlik (5-1) threw his second consecutive complete game, striking out nine and walking two in the Santa Fe League game.

Bell-Jeff has won six in a row.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Pierce 7, Rio Hondo 6--Mike Glendenning’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth tied the score, 6-6, and Casey Doherty doubled to drive in Dave Cipolla with the winning run in a nonleague game at Pierce.

Glendenning, who drove in five runs, had a three-run double in the fourth and an RBI double in the seventh.

Cipolla, Cesar Martinez, John Novak and Brandon Murphy each had two hits for the Brahmas (17-15).

Oxnard 8, Porterville 1--Raudel Flores slugged a bases-loaded triple, and Armando Carrillo allowed two hits over seven innings, striking out five for the Condors (17-15) in a nonconference game at Oxnard.

SOFTBALL

Newbury Park 2, Villa Park 0; Newbury Park 4, Santa Maria St. Joseph’s 1--Kristi Fox won both games for the Panthers (11-3), clinching the consolation championship of the Righetti tournament.

Fox pitched a two-hitter in the consolation championship game against Villa Park. She made the all-tournament team.

Amy Berman of Newbury Park, who had four hits in the two games, also made the all-tournament team.

Maricopa 6, Antelope Valley Christian 5--The Indians (10-2) pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take third place at the Community Christian tournament in Bakersfield.

Dawn Miranda (8-6) scattered eight hits and had three hits, including a double, and Rose Curry added two hits for the Eagles (9-6), who defeated Cuyama Valley, 13-3, in an earlier game.

Santa Clara 2, Oxnard 1--Katie Thomas tripled in the winning run with two out in the eighth inning for the Saints (5-6) in a nonleague game at the Oxnard Community Park. Genevieve Moreno hit her second home run of the season for Oxnard (4-10).

Alemany 3, Arcadia 1--Sophie Contreras (16-1) tossed a five-hitter and struck out four, Tiffany Curcio had a two-run single and Kim Diener added a run-scoring single for the Indians (18-1) in the championship game of the High Desert tournament at Antelope Valley.

GOLF

Loyola 204, Notre Dame 208--Clark Pingree fired a two-over-par 37 for Notre Dame (3-7-1, 3-4) to earn medalist honors in a Mission League match at Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake.
