Eight girls basketball players from San Gabriel Valley-area schools were selected first-team All-Southern Section in their divisions by the Amateur Athletic Foundation-First Interstate Bank selection board.

Division I: Jaime Gast of Diamond Bar and Joyce Garcia of San Gabriel.

Division II: Stacey Nuveman of St. Lucy’s and Tomisha Hughes of Muir.

Division III: Katy Grubbs of South Pasadena and Christen King of San Dimas.

Division V: Karen Ellis and Amber Gravely of Pasadena Poly.

* Bishop Amat’s baseball team is ranked seventh and St. Lucy’s softball team is ranked 12th in the Cal-Hi Sports state polls.

In the state divisional baseball poll, Bishop Amat is ranked fifth in Division I. San Marino is fifth in Division III.

In the divisional softball poll, St. Lucy’s is second in Division II.

In Southern Section baseball polls, Bishop Amat is fourth in Division I, Glendora third and Northview sixth in Division II; Walnut is 10th in Division III. San Marino is first, Temple City second, Sierra Vista seventh, Arroyo eighth and Gladstone 10th in Division IV. Pasadena Poly is fifth and Maranatha 10th in Division V.

In Southern Section softball polls, St. Lucy’s is third, South Hills ninth and Claremont 10th in Division III.

* Seven boys tennis teams from the San Gabriel Valley are among those ranked in Southern Section polls.

Diamond Bar is sixth in Division I. San Marino is fourth in Division II, Pasadena Poly is third and Keppel 10th in Division III; South Hills is second, San Dimas sixth and Covina eighth in Division IV.

* Boys relay teams from Muir established nation-leading marks Friday in the Arcadia Invitational track meet.

The 400-meter team, which includes Joaquin Gray, DeAngelo Steward, Jucori Tyron and Obea Moore, posted a time of 41.18 seconds.

The 1,600-meter team, also anchored by Moore, won in 3 minutes 14.52 seconds.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Mt. San Antonio College’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium will be the focal point of the world track and field scene this weekend when the 37th annual Mt. San Antonio College Relays are staged.

The open meet will feature many world-class performers, including Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell and Michael Marsh.

* Citrus College’s LaTaya Woods, a former standout at Blair High, was selected to the All-State basketball team by the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn.

Woods, a sophomore who also competes in track for the Owls, averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds a game last season.

COLLEGES

La Verne University’s baseball team won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship last weekend with the help of an outstanding performance by pitcher J.D. Romero.

Romero helped the Leopards clinch a share of the title by striking out 19 in a 2-1, 13-inning victory over Occidental on Friday. La Verne won the title outright on Saturday with an 8-3 victory over Occidental.

La Verne entered the week 26-7 and 18-0 in the SCIAC.

* Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team had a short stay atop the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. standings.

A week after moving into first place, the Broncos dropped three of four games last week against Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos are three games behind league-leading UC Riverside, who they play this week, and two games behind San Bernardino.

* Shortstop Jon Chaparro of Azusa Pacific is batting .692 in his past six games and .377 for the season.

Azusa Pacific, which takes a break from Golden State Athletic Conference action this week, is ranked 17th in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Cougars are 26-7 and 15-2 in conference play.

Paul Coppes leads the conference with a .438 batting average. Brian Hagerty is 9-0 with a 1.95 earned-run average.

* Azusa Pacific’s softball team had its nine-game winning streak end with a 3-0 loss to Loyola Marymount in the championship game of the UC San Diego tournament.

Liz Campbell is batting .405 for the Cougars, who are 24-13 and 11-3 in the GSAC.

* Azusa Pacific University is playing host to the California Invitational Decathlon/Heptathlon today and Friday.

The event is expected to draw about 65 multi-event athletes, including Olympic bronze medalist Dave Johnson and NAIA champions Tage Peterson and David Pope of Azusa Pacific.

* Fatima Yusef of Azusa Pacific established two school records last weekend with her performance in a triangular meet against Cal State Los Angeles and Occidental.

Fatima won the 100 meters in 11.58 seconds and the 200 in 22.97 to break her records of 11.60 and 23.30.

* Competitors from Cal Poly Pomona and Azusa Pacific will be among those participating in the college portion of the Mt. SAC Relays.

The Broncos are led by shotputter Nicole Beauregard and triple jumper Dominique Hughes, who have qualified for the NCAA Division II championships.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Pedro Flores, Sierra Vista--Flores, a senior, improved to 5-0 with his fifth consecutive shutout in a 10-0 Montview League victory over Azusa.

Flores entered the week within one shutout of the Southern Section record established by Scott McGregor, a former major league all-star with the Baltimore Orioles who pitched six consecutive shutouts for El Segundo High in 1972.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

J.D. Romero, La Verne--Romero struck out 19 batters in 13 innings as La Verne clinched a share of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball title with a 2-1 victory over Occidental on Friday.

Romero improved his record to 6-2.

MISCELLANY

The third annual Crown Valley Senior Games will begin April 21 and continue through May 6 at venues throughout the San Gabriel Valley. More than 1,200 athletes 50 and over will compete in 26 sports. Participants will qualify for the state championships in Sacramento next year and the national championships at Tucson in 1977. Information: (818) 397-4062.

* The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged May 27, beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.
