HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Sylmar Sweeps Closer to Title

Solid pitching performances in two games Friday helped Sylmar High move closer to the championship of the Bishop Gorman baseball tournament in Las Vegas.

Sylmar defeated Las Vegas, 5-2, and Bell, 5-1, to remain unbeaten in pool play entering the final day of the tournament.

The Spartans play Wood River, Idaho, today at 3 p.m.

Sylmar (12-3) has given up four runs in three games. The champion of the 30-team tournament is determined by pool-play record. In case of a tie, the team that gives up the fewest runs wins the championship.

Steve Zamora (4-1) pitched a seven-hitter with three strikeouts and one walk in the victory over Las Vegas.

In the second game, Albert Palma (2-0) pitched a six-hitter and gave up no earned runs in his second start of the season. He struck out two and walked four.

Calabasas 6, Chatsworth 2--Tanner Trosper and Jared Sandler held the Chancellors to three hits as the Coyotes defeated Chatsworth for the second time this season.

Sandler had two hits and drove in a run in the fourth with a double for Calabasas (13-0).

In two games against Chatsworth, Trosper has given up only four hits in 10 1/3 innings and struck out 11.

Rio Mesa 13, Righetti 4--Chad Snyder had two hits and three RBIs and Vince Roman went three for four in a third-round game of the Santa Barbara tournament at UC Santa Barbara.

The Spartans (11-4), the only undefeated team in round-robin play at 3-0, play Santa Barbara in the finale today.

Littlerock 12, Western (Las Vegas) 4--Ricardo Lopez had a two-run home run for the Lobos in a pool-play game of the Bishop Gorman tournament.

Frank Landano (4-2) gave up four hits and struck out two for Littlerock.

Lehi (Utah) 4, Littlerock 0--Bob Roberts, James Jefferson and Ricardo Lopez had the only hits as the Lobos lost later in the day.

Kennedy 6, West Torrance 1--The Cougars used a six-run sixth inning to defeat the Warriors in the Bishop Gorman tournament.

Kennedy scored five runs with two out, taking advantage of three West Torrance errors.

John Garland doubled in two runs for Kennedy (12-3) and Derek Morse pitched a six-hitter.
