1995 PREP BASKETBALL ALL-STARS : Girls’ Team Is a Blend of Ball Handling, Shooting Skills

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The prototypal high school basketball team includes guards with outstanding shooting, passing and ball handling skills, forwards who score inside and from the perimeter, and centers who dominate play near the basket.

Unfortunately for coaches, getting that combination of talent on a team is nearly impossible.

But The Times’ 1995 San Gabriel Valley all-star team includes 10 players who fit the mold perfectly.

The selection of the players, four of whom were named to the team last season, were based on ballots cast by area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate, and a poll of Times sportswriters. The coaches were also asked to nominate a coach of the year.

Players named to the team, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Pasadena Holiday Inn. The winners of the San Gabriel Valley player and coach of the year awards will be announced at the breakfast.

Here is a look at The Times’ 1995 All-San Gabriel Valley team:

Darcy Burton, Wilson--Burton, a 5-foot-1 forward, was a presence on offense and defense for the Wildcats.

She averaged 13.8 points and 12 rebounds and was selected to the All-Miramonte League team.

Terri Cortez, Glendora--Several coaches characterized the 5-4 Cortez as one of the area’s best three-point shooters.

The All-Baseline League player averaged 13.1 points and also contributed two rebounds and three assists a game.
