HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Royal Takes a 5-0 Lead, Gives It Up

Eric Mahanke’s one-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday scored Brent Bush to give Newbury Park High a 7-6 Marmonte League upset over Royal.

Newbury Park (6-12, 2-5) scored four runs in the inning on four singles, a walk, an error by the Highlanders (12-7, 4-3) and a sacrifice fly by Kes Andersen that tied the score.

Mike Amundson earned his second save by striking out two batters with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

Amundson started the Panthers’ comeback with a two-run home run in the fourth inning when Royal had a 5-0 lead.

Camarillo 9, Agoura 6--Nick Moody’s solo home run highlighted a six-run first inning by the Scorpions in a Marmonte League game.

Moody had two hits and finished with three runs batted in for Camarillo (13-5, 5-2). Matt Buttell added two hits and two RBIs for Camarillo.

Mike Corrall, Roth Valencia and Tom Trejo limited Agoura (8-10, 1-6) to three hits.

Westlake 10, Channel Islands 3--Matt Riordan had three hits, including a two-run home run, and four RBIs, for the Warriors (14-3, 5-2) in a Marmonte League game.

Corey Kling and Brian Schuster each had two hits and junior Tim Carr hit a three-run home run for Westlake.

Kenny Long had three hits for Channel Islands (7-11, 2-5).

Simi Valley 11, Thousand Oaks 7--Neil Oberheide had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Adam Springston (7-1) pitched four innings to pick up the victory for the Pioneers (14-5, 6-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Jeff Michael, Tim Nykoluk and Robert Comeau each had two hits for Simi Valley.

La Mirada 5, Alemany 3--Todd Hoover tied the game with a two-run double in the fourth and Gus Lira scored in the sixth to put the Indians ahead, but they couldn’t hold on in a St. Paul tournament game at La Mirada.

The Matadors tied the score with an unearned run at the bottom of the sixth and tacked on two more.

Kris Yeaman (0-2) struck out two and allowed five hits for Alemany (9-6).

Harvard-Westlake 10, Montclair Prep 8--Ryan Smiley hit a grand slam and David Tuizer added a two-run homer three batters later in a six-run third inning as the Wolverines (3-13) held off the Mounties (11-5) in a nonleague game at Harvard.

Derek Lemkin had two hits for Harvard, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Teammate Spencer Hudnut added a triple, double and single.

Andy Gadt (1-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Wolverines, striking out three.

Bell-Jeff 7, Eastside Christian (Seattle) 6--John Pawlik (6-1) struck out six, walked three and allowed three earned runs while scattering nine hits as the Guards (13-4) earned their 10th consecutive victory in the Division II championship game of the St. Paul tournament.

Josh Readman singled, doubled and tripled for Bell-Jeff, driving in one run and scoring the game-winner in the fourth inning.

Fillmore 5, L.A. Baptist 0--Chris Goodenough pitched a two-hitter for the Flashes (4-9-1), striking out seven in a nonleague game at Fillmore.

Tim McLain hit a two-run homer in the second and drove in the final run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.

Scott Page (6-1), who struck out eight for the Knights (14-2), gave up all of Fillmore’s runs despite pitching a four-hitter.

Glenn 2, St. Francis 1--Dan Sereno doubled home a run in the seventh but the Golden Knights (10-10) left the winning run on third base in a St. Paul tournament game at Glenn.

With runners at first and third in the seventh inning, Glenn’s infield turned a line drive into a game-ending double play.

Paul Diaz (2-2) had four strikeouts and Jason Garcia tripled for the Golden Knights.
