SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Loyola High standout Moose Bailey scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the AND1 Southern California High School/Junior College All-Star Classic on Tuesday at Cal State Long Beach’s Pyramid Arena.

Bailey and his White squad teammates may have lost to the Blue squad, 118-103, but the 6-foot-2 guard gained respect with his strong play, including a dazzling layup after a crossover dribble.

“It was fun to get out there and run,” said Bailey, who turned down a basketball scholarship to the University of Portland to attend a fifth-year preparatory high school on the East Coast. “It’s like playing in the parks--you have to go out there and impress.”

In the junior college classic, five players from Los Angeles City College were asked to play, but Cub guards Jason Wright, Markee Brown, Derek Higgins and forwards Sai Tuialli and Derek Brown were not in attendance.

“The coach (Mike Miller) felt we didn’t give them (early enough) an earlier notice,” event coordinator Dinos Trigonis said. “He said, ‘(I) won’t let them play because we didn’t know anything about it.’ ”

Miller responded: “They never called me for permission to use my players. They wanted them to promote an all-star game. But my players don’t need any promotion if they already have Division I scholarships.”

Among the Cubs who will receive scholarships are Tuialli (USC), Derek Brown (Providence), and Wright (New Orleans). Higgins will choose among Pepperdine, Cal State Northridge, and South Alabama. Markee Brown has narrowed his choices to Clemson, Hawaii, Providence and Tulane.

In the high school game, San Bernardino Pacific’s Brent Burnett scored 21 points and Lakewood Artesia’s Jonathon Nelson added 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Blue team.

The 6-8 Nelson had several impressive dunks, as did the 6-6 Burnett. Nelson signed with the University of Oregon. Burnett is still undecided.

The contest was close throughout the first quarter, with the Blue leading, 61-57, at the end of the first half. But after intermission, the Blue went on an 11-2 run to start the second period.

Bailey’s layup with 9:52 left in the second quarter brought his team to within three points, but they would not get any closer.

Long Beach Wilson’s 6-8 center Michael Batiste had a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds for the White team. Manual Arts’ Charlie Parker, Jr., son of USC Coach Charlie Parker, added seven points for White.

In the junior college game, Cerritos College’s Gerald Rowden scored a game-high 26 points to help the White squad to a 124-109 victory.

The Blue team, however, received outstanding play from Cerritos College’s Robin Kennedy and Chaffey’s Reggie Cotton.

Kennedy, a 5-10 guard who is being recruited by Cal State Long Beach, Fresno State and Nevada-Las Vegas, had seven points and 15 assists. Cotton, a 6-3 guard who is being recruited by Clemson, Texas-El Paso and Auburn, scored 26 points. Cotton also had several spectacular dunks, including two reverses and a dunk off a half-court alley-oop pass from Kennedy.

But the most exciting play came when Kennedy drove down the lane, jumped into Cotton’s hands and was lifted for a two-handed slam.

“This is my game,” Cotton said. “I love dunking. That’s why they call me Air Sick. I can get sick from jumping so high.”

Cotton, 24, may skip his final two years of eligibility and try out for the NBA. He has been invited to free-agent camps with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Chicago Bulls.
