HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Royal Holds On to Win, 4-3, After Devan’s Blast

Mike Devan’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and Royal held on to upset Westlake, 4-3, in a Marmonte League baseball game Wednesday at Royal.

Westlake (15-4, 6-3 in league play) narrowed its deficit to one on Matt Riordan’s two-run double with one out in the seventh, but Adrian Mendoza retired the next two batters. Mendoza (6-0) gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked two.

Westlake took a 1-0 lead in the first on a single by Riordan, but Royal (13-7, 5-4) scored a run on three hits off Warrior starter Erik Devine in the third.

Brent Eby replaced Devine in the fifth and gave up a double and Devan’s home run.

Thousand Oaks 14, Camarillo 7--The Lancers committed 10 errors, but still upset the Scorpions (14-6, 6-3) in the Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Tyler Holmes had three hits and four runs batted in and Jack Wilson had three hits and three RBIs for the Lancers (13-8, 5-4).

Tim Baron (2-3), a senior who will attend Cal State Fullerton, picked up the victory in relief after coming on in the second.

Simi Valley 13, Newbury Park 6--Brian Kavanagh homered, doubled and singled to lead the Pioneers (15-6, 7-2) at Newbury Park and put Simi Valley in sole possession of first place in the Marmonte League. Mike Amundson went two for two and drove in a run with a double for the Panthers (7-13, 3-6).

Channel Islands 3, Agoura 2--Mike Sendejas scattered seven hits and freshman Jared Krehbiel was three for four for the Raiders in a Marmonte League game at Agoura.

Krehbiel doubled in a run in the first to give Channel Islands (8-12, 3-6) a 1-0 lead and the Raiders added two unearned runs in the third for a 3-0 advantage.

Cory Fish had two hits for Agoura (8-12, 1-8).

Notre Dame 10, Harvard-Westlake 2--Robbie Brewster had three hits and drove in four runs for the Knights in a Golden League game at Harvard. Mike Acosta had two hits and drove in two runs, and Marc Jannone had a pinch-hit home run for Notre Dame (10-7-1, 4-3-1).

Crespi 7, Alemany 6--The Celts’ Tomy Salazar singled to score Tony Gonzalez with the winning run in the seventh inning of a Mission League game at Crespi.

Celt reliever Jon Cuccias (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh.

Crespi’s Brian Luderer, Barry Matthews and Matt Long each had three hits. Alemany’s Todd Hoover had two hits and two RBIs.

Chaminade 7, St. Francis 3--Gabe Crecion drove in four runs with a pair of triples in the first two innings for the Eagles (10-9, 3-5) in a Golden League game at St. Francis.

Jason Giovannettone had two hits and stole three bases for Chaminade. Joe Beldino and Dan Sereno each had two hits for St. Francis (10-11, 4-4).

Sherman Oaks CES 15, Los Angeles CES 0--Oscar Loera drove in four runs with a two-run double and a two-run triple to lead the Knights (3-0) to a Magnet Conference victory at Los Angeles CES.

Nate Leiker allowed two hits and struck out 11.
