SOFTBALL STAR: Junior catcher Scia Maumausolo, one of the country’s top 10 hitters, almost didn’t return to lead CSUN to this year’s top-10 ranking. . . . A string of losses was bad enough, but without her old teammates, Maumausolo was ready to pack her bags for another school (C12).

PARTISAN ATTACK: Assembly Republicans attacked the traditionally non-controversial League of Women Voters on Thursday, saying that rather than being nonpartisan, as the group has long claimed, it is a left-leaning organ (A3). One league member in the Valley said she could understand the attack, even though she disagreed with the premise. “The league strives very hard to be nonpartisan,” said Louise Ronne, a member of the League’s West Valley unit. “We do not endorse Republican candidates or Democratic candidates. But when it comes to legislation, we have a set program of things that we lobby for and they tend to be more liberal.”

TWO-WHEELERS: Thursday may have been California’s first Bicycle Commute Day (B9), but no one told Tom Souza, who coordinates bicycle-safety programs for the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division. . . . Nor was the event obvious. “I don’t think it was widely adhered to in the Valley,” Souza said. “I didn’t see a lot of groups riding around.”
