HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Gilman Makes Splash in Channel League Finals

Sophomore Rebecca Gilman set two Channel League individual records and added a third on a relay to lead Buena High to an overwhelming victory in the Channel League girls’ swimming championships at Ventura High.

Gilman set records in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.61) and 500 freestyle (4:52.64), and joined Nicole Beck, Erin Schatz and Liah Kim on the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.40).

Beck, a freshman, set a league record in the 100 backstroke (57.14) and Kim set another in the 100 butterfly (58.44).

The Bulldogs also took the boys’ title as Sean Askay won the 200 freestyle and swam the second leg as Buena won the 400 freestyle relay.

Oxnard capped its best boys’ season since 1985 with a third-place finish by Dustin Sanchez in the 100 butterfly.

Marmonte League finals--Nick O’Hara won the 500-yard freestyle and 200 individual medley, leading Westlake to the boys’ title at Rancho Simi Pool.

Westlake had 394 points to 208 for Camarillo.

Agoura finished third at 195.

Randy Owens won the 50 and 100 freestyles for Royal.

Shaina Christensen won the 100 and 200 freestyle events as Thousand Oaks took the girls’ title with 292 points.

Jamie McIntyre won the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley for Royal, which finished second at 264. Westlake finished third with 247.

Mission League finals--Joel Everman of Notre Dame won the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.81) and 500 freestyle (4:53.74) at Valley College.

Sisters Jennifer and Allison Abbey of Flintridge Sacred Heart each won two events. Jennifer won the 200 individual medley (2:09.89) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.39). Allison won the 50 freestyle (25.86) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.07).

Kelly Evanilla of Flintridge Sacred Heart won the 200 freestyle (1:59.09) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.96).

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 16, Hart 2--The Bulldogs’ doubles teams of Tim Harris-Stefan D’Angona and Oliver Lao-Amerson Suson capped a 24-0 seasons in Foothill League play with 3-0 sweeps in a match at Burbank.

The Bulldogs (17-2, 8-0) won the Foothill League for the eighth consecutive season.

Westlake 9, Royal 9--Bobby Perez and Mike Perillo won five of six sets at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to help the Warriors (15-5, 10-3) win the tiebreaker, 77-75, in games in a Marmonte League match.

Perez and Perillo outscored the Highlanders, 30-6, in the five sets.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. L.A. Baptist, 15-12, 15-7, 15-13--Chad Hanson had 20 kills and Kiko Banos added 16 for the Crusaders (16-0, 10-0) in an Alpha League match at L.A. Baptist.

David Ludwig helped with four blocks and three aces.

Highland d. Saugus, 15-2, 15-12, 17-15--Ryan Millar had 35 kills for the Bulldogs (16-0, 16-0) in a Golden League match at Highland.

Brandon Kimball had 42 assists for Highland.

Royal d. Camarillo, 15-3, 15-0, 15-2--Eric Carlsen had seven kills and four blocks in a Marmonte League match at Royal.

Donnie Wright added five kills for the Highlanders (14-2, 14-0).

Thousand Oaks d. Channel Islands, 15-8, 9-15, 15-6, 15-9--Brandon Marsh had 46 assists and 13 digs for the Lancers (10-4, 10-4), who finished second in the Marmonte League.

Brian Callahan added 10 kills.

Melanio Lopez had 21 kills, Christmas Valoaga had 16 and Junior Mosones added 57 assists for the Raiders (12-4, 10-4).

Agoura d. Newbury Park, 15-6, 18-16, 13-15, 15-13--Bryan Denove had 48 assists to set up Zack Elam, who added 31 kills, in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Kyle Alexander added 21 blocks for the Chargers.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Northwest Valley Conference preliminaries--Charles Lee of Cleveland ran 21.2 in the 200 meters in boys’ qualifying at Birmingham High.

Lee also tied for the top time in the 100 with a 10.6 clocking.

Taft’s Moses Backus led 400 qualifiers with a 49.9 clocking, and was right behind Lee in the 200 with a time of 21.3.

Marvin Powell of Birmingham led the way in the 100 low hurdles at 14.7, and clocked 49.2 in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Northwest Valley Conference preliminaries-- Taft’s Eboni Grayson led the way at 12.3 seconds in the 100-meter dash and also qualified in the 200 with a time of 25.7 at Birmingham.

Shalauna Brock of Birmingham ran the fastest 200 heat with a time of 25.5, and ran 12.4 in the 100.

Tynisha Howze of Taft led the way in the 400 with a 1:00.5 clocking and also qualified in the 200 with a time of 25.9.

Chatsworth’s Melinda George ran a best of 2:33.6 in the 800, and also reached the 1,600 finals with a time of 5:25.4.

Satin Lewis of Cleveland led in both hurdle races, 17.1 in the 100 highs and 50.3 in the lows.

The finals for the boys and girls are Friday at Birmingham.
