Northridge in Command of Wacky Title Race

Share

The Cal State Northridge softball team can clinch its third consecutive Western Athletic Conference title by sweeping San Diego State today in a rescheduled doubleheader at Northridge at 1:30 p.m.

Northridge (39-15, 20-5) has a two-game lead over Utah (27-18, 18-7) with two games, and possibly three, remaining.

If Northridge loses one or both games to San Diego State (21-37, 10-16), Utah’s scheduled doubleheader against Southern Utah will be moved from Saturday to Thursday. And if Utah sweeps Southern Utah, games that were rained out last weekend must be made up.

The Matadors would travel to Fresno State (46-17, 17-8) to complete last week’s game that was suspended after three innings because of rain with Northridge leading, 2-1, in the top of the fourth. Utah would return to Colorado State for a single game.

Joe Wyatt, a Times’ All-Valley selection in 1993, has accepted a basketball scholarship to Boise State, College of the Sequoias basketball Coach John Boragno said Tuesday.

Wyatt, who averaged 30 points a game as a senior at Kennedy High, was Northern California Junior College player of the year and state co-player of the year for Sequoias.

The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 19.3 points a game. He also considered offers from Cal State Northridge and Northern Arizona.

Wyatt must pass two three-unit classes over the summer to earn his Associate in Arts degree and meet NCAA requirements to transfer to a Division I university.

Wyatt will be reunited with Boise State assistant Ernie Wheeler, who coached at Sequoias when Wyatt was a freshman.
