HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Palmdale’s Paxton Becomes Doubles King

Palmdale High catcher Chris Paxton broke the Southern Section record for doubles in a career and the Falcons (16-8, 8-1) clinched the Golden League championship with a 13-7 victory of Antelope Valley on Tuesday.

Paxton had two doubles, giving him a total of 43, breaking the record set by Jakob Jensen of Highland Hall from 1988-91. Paxton drove in four runs and has 17 runs batted in in four games.

Ben Mia had four hits--including a double and triple--drove in four runs and scored two for the Falcons.

Damon Williams had a home run and a double, three RBIs and scored two runs, and Kevin Barlow added three hits and scored three runs for the Antelopes (7-14, 4-5).

Rio Mesa 1, Hueneme 0--Daniel Martinez hit a home run leading off the secind inning to give the Spartans (16-6, 9-4) a Channel League victory over the Vikings (12-12, 5-8) at Rio Mesa.

Richard Soliz (3-2) struck out seven and walked four in six innings for Rio Mesa.

Buena 11, Oxnard 3--Mario Robledo homered twice, and Chris Carr and Darryl Mundy also hit homers for the Bulldogs (12-9, 5-7) in a Channel League game.

Quartz Hill 8, Ridgecrest Burroughs 1--J.D. Smith had a pair of three-run homers and Kyle Goss homered, singled and drove in two runs for the Rebels in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill.

Darrell Hussman (8-1) allowed one hit and struck out six over four innings for the Rebels (15-5, 6-3).

Highland 4, Littlerock 1--Jake Stanwood had two hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs (7-15, 3-6) in a Golden League game at Littlerock

Ricardo Lopez had two hits and drove in a run for the Lobos.

Hart 12, Canyon 2--Brian Baron had three hits and three RBIs for the Indians (18-7, 10-1) in a Foothill League victory over the Cowboys (9-13, 3-7) at Canyon.

Hart’s Chris Baker (9-2) scattered eight hits over four innings.

Glendale 12, Hoover 4--Mark Martin went four for four--including a two-run home run in the third inning--and drove in three runs for the Dynamiters (11-9, 7-7) at Hoover.

Glendale clinched third place in the Pacific League and its sixth playoff berth in nine years.

Davey Garley had three hits--including a leadoff home run--and drove in two runs.

Chaminade 10, Montclair Prep 3--Gabe Crecion had three hits and drove in two runs for the Eagles (14-9) in a nonleague game. Chaminade has won seven games in a row.

Chris Gray (2-0) pitched a seven-hitter for the Eagles, scattering seven hits, striking out four and walking one. Kevin Lohman stole three bases.

Moorpark 4, Malibu 0--Brian Bernie (1-0) pitched a three-hitter for the Musketeers (9-12, 7-7), striking out five and walking one in a Frontier League victory over the Sharks (0-20, 0-14) at Moorpark.

Calabasas 7, Nordhoff 0--Brandon Cohen pitched a one-hitter, giving up a bunt single in the sixth, for the Coyotes (23-0, 14-0) in a Frontier League game. Cohen had eight strikeouts and walked five.

Zach Fields had three hits and drove in three runs for Calabasas.

Oak Park 9, Bishop Diego 5--Brian McMullen drove in two runs and Vaughn Corley (4-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory as the Eagles (12-6, 10-2) clinched a co-championship in the Tri-Valley League.

Scott Christensen pitched 1 2/3 to earn his sixth save.

St. Bonaventure 5, Carpinteria 1--Danny Harrison had 13 strikeouts and two walks while pitching a three-hitter for the Seraphs (10-7, 6-5) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Jeremy Scarlett had three hits and drove in four runs.

Faith Baptist 21, Campbell Hall 5--Colby Carpenter had four hits, including a grand slam and two doubles, and drove in five runs, and Judd Granzow hit two home runs, drove in five and scored five for the Contenders in a Delphic League game.

Freshman Tim Greer had three doubles and scored three runs, and Jay Carpenter homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Faith Baptist (13-8, 5-4).

Santa Paula 2, Santa Clara 1--Jaime Padilla relieved Carlos Torres with two out and two on in the seventh inning and forced Mike Stewart to ground out, ending the Frontier League game and clinching second place for the Cardinals (12-8, 8-6) at Santa Clara.

Frank Arevalo doubled, singled and drove in the Santa Clara run.

St. Francis 10, Harvard-Westlake 5--Javier Guevera tripled, singled and drove in five runs, and Rob Eland added three hits for the Golden Knights (12-13, 6-5) in a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake.

Steve Marotta and Ryan Ventrella each doubled and singled for the Golden Knights.

Paraclete 8, Kern Valley 7--A bases-loaded sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning by Raul Gutierrez scored Robbie Wood to give Paraclete (14-7, 8-1) the High Desert League championship.

Bill Kneifl hit a solo home run in the first inning and added a two-run single in the fourth for Paraclete.

CITY SECTION

Monroe 2, Reseda 0--Wayne Nix threw his second consecutive one-hitter, allowing a single by Brian Menkin in the fourth inning. Nix struck out eight and walked one for the Vikings (16-8, 12-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe.

The game was scoreless until the sixth when Ray Rodriguez doubled home Josh Miranda. David Lusk followed with a single to score pinch-runner Will Salazar.

Nix has allowed only two hits in his last three starts. He had a one-hitter against Van Nuys last week and a no-hitter against Canoga Park two weeks ago.

North Hollywood 2, Grant 1--Danny Curtin (1-3) pitched four scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing three hits for the Huskies (5-20, 4-11) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory over the Lancers (5-17, 4-11).

Curtin also had three hits in his first appearance since injuring a shoulder April 11.

Kennedy 10, San Fernando 1--Left-hander Robert Montesdeoca threw his first complete game, striking out six and walking none in a Northwest Valley Conference victory over the Tigers (10-14, 4-11) at Kennedy.

Aldo Pinto had two hits and five RBIs for Kennedy (21-3, 13-2).

Granada Hills 3, Cleveland 0--Josh Goldberg pitched a two-hitter and Tom O’Brien hit a two-run home run for the Highlanders (14-9, 8-7) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.

Goldberg (7-4) struck out six and walked five.

Jarod Mills (2-5) gave up two earned runs and three hits in five innings for Cleveland (6-15, 4-11).

El Camino Real 6, Taft 2--Mike Conn had two hits and drove in four runs for the Conquistadores (16-7-1, 10-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real. Conn (6-2) gave up five hits and two walks.

Marvin Jones had two doubles for El Camino Real and Ryan Long had two hits and scored a run for Taft (5-18, 4-11).

Chatsworth 10, Birmingham 3--Jon Tucker had two hits and drove in four runs for the Chancellors (14-9, 9-6) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Ray Daryibigi and Fred Farzaneh each added two hits and Harry Kenoi picked up his first save.

Lionel Villarreal had two hits for Birmingham (14-10, 8-7).

Van Nuys 6, Canoga Park 3--Avo Atolikian had three hits, including a solo homer and a two-run triple, driving in three runs for the Wolves in a Valley Pac-8 game.

Carlos Flores hit a two-run homer in the fourth to give Van Nuys a 3-0 lead.

Van Nuys freshman Angel Barajas (1-6) pitched a five-hitter.
