HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : After Winning 14 in Row, Kennedy Drops One

Sean Lavery drove in three runs, one on what was ruled a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Granada Hills High a 5-4 upset of Kennedy in a Northwest Valley Conference game Thursday at Granada Hills.

Lavery’s fly ball with the bases loaded in the seventh was dropped, scoring Jarrett Gold to snap a 4-4 tie and break Kennedy’s 14-game winning streak.

Adrian Torres scored three times for Granada Hills (15-9, 9-7). Terrmel Sledge and David Soto each had two hits for Kennedy (21-4, 13-3).

Reseda 5, Van Nuys 2--Jason Segal had a double, a triple and three RBIs in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.

Brian Menkin (4-3) pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven for Reseda (6-10, 6-10).

Grant 9, Sylmar 3--Adam Frank hit a grand slam in the second inning to break open a Valley Pac-8 game at Grant.

Walter Rios of Grant (6-17, 5-11) allowed eight hits but the Spartans (17-7, 11-5) managed only one that went for extra bases.

Birmingham 10, Taft 5--Facundo Barrera had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, and Jason Barbanell had two doubles and two RBIs as the Braves (15-10, 9-7) beat the Toreadors (5-19, 4-12) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Birmingham.

Cleveland 5, San Fernando 0--Mike Schultz pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 Tigers, and had two hits and an RBI in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Cleveland (7-15, 5-11).

Poly 10, North Hollywood 2--Travis McGivern went four for four and Paco Hernandez had two hits and two RBIs as the Parrots (19-5, 15-1) beat the Huskies (5-21, 4-12) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Franklin 10, Verdugo Hills 4--The Panthers hit five home runs in a Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills (5-11, 1-7).

Chatsworth 3, El Camino Real 0--Fred Farzaneh, Pat Rizzotti and Rod Darybigin had RBI singles in the ninth inning for the Chancellors (15-9, 10-6) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real (16-8-1, 10-6).

Alemany 8, Chaminade 5--Indian sophomore Joe Melaragno retired three batters with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of a Mission League game at Alemany.

Alemany’s Alex Peran had a three-run double in the third to tie the game, 3-3, and the Indians scored four more in the sixth.

Saugus 4, Canyon 3--Nate Wright’s single with two out in the bottom of the eighth drove in Jessie Alvarado from second base and gave the Centurions (14-10, 7-5) a Foothill League victory over the Cowboys (9-14, 4-8).

Brandon Hernandez (2-2) of Saugus pitched two hitless innings.

Hart 7, Burroughs 0--Luis Sanchez hit his sixth and seventh home runs and Eric Horvat added his third for Hart (19-7, 11-1) in a Foothill League game.

Hart’s Ron Jones (6-2) allowed three hits in four innings, struck out five and walked none.

Arcadia 4, Glendale 2--Andrew Hawkins (3-2) pitched his fourth complete game but the Dynamiters (11-10, 7-8) had only three hits in a Pacific League loss to the Apaches (19-5, 12-3).

Antelope Valley 20, Littlerock 5--David Nichols had a double and two triples, five RBIs and three runs for the Antelopes (8-14, 5-5) in a Golden League game.

Sean Douglass added five RBIs with a homer, triple and single.

Hoover 6, Muir 3--Frank Diaz had three hits and an RBI for the Tornadoes (10-13, 6-9) in a Pacific League game at Muir.
