Pierce, Moorpark Open Regional

Pierce and Moorpark colleges will play today as the 16-team Southern California baseball regional gets underway with eight best-of-three series.

Pierce (25-16), seeded No. 5, will play host to No. 12 Mt. San Antonio (31-11) and No. 14 Moorpark (27-13) will travel to No. 3 Cypress (30-13-1), defending state champion.

All games today will start at 2 p.m. The second game in each series, also at the same site, is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by a third game if needed.

The series winners will advance to the second round May 19-21, which will be played in two four-team groups. The two survivors will qualify for the State championships, where two teams from the North also will participate, May 27-29 at Fresno City.

Pierce won the Western State Conference South Division title and Moorpark finished second in the North Division behind Hancock.

Soccer

Agoura sweeper Shannon Finney said she will attend Humboldt State.

Finney was an All-Marmonte League selection last season and helped the Chargers to a Southern Section Division I wild-card berth.

She chose the Lumberjacks, who do not give scholarships, over Pepperdine and Oregon State.

Water Polo

Buena and Ventura highs have scheduled an alumni match for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Ventura High pool.
