SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After playing one season at the University of Houston, Tommie Davis, a former basketball star at Fremont and Crenshaw high schools, has decided to transfer to Long Beach State to be closer to his family.

“It was just too far away from home,” Davis said. “It makes a real big difference when you can go to your mom’s house or a relative’s house after the game.”

Davis, a 5-foot-7 point guard, had received a scholarship to Houston. As a freshman, he averaged 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals a game. He started 22 of the Cougars’ 23 final games and was selected to the all-Southwest Conference freshman team.
