SOUTHERN SECTION SECOND-ROUND SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS : La Mirada Upsets Top-Seeded Saugus on One-Hitter, 4-0

La Mirada’s Jenny Finch pitched a one-hitter against top-seeded Saugus and upset the Centurions, 4-0, in a Division II game Tuesday at La Mirada.

Finch struck out 11 for the Matadors (20-7). Saugus finishes 23-5.

St. Paul 1, Hart 0--Diane Avila scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning of a game at St. Paul. Stephanie Senteno pitched a five-hitter for the Swordsmen (23-3), striking out eight.

Hart’s Mary Colleran (21-9) allowed five hits and struck out three.

DIVISION I

Marina 2, Newbury Park 0--Marcy Crouch (20-4) fired a no-hitter, striking out 11, and scored the go-ahead run for the third-seeded Vikings (21-5) in a game at Borchard Park. Melissa Brecht, who was hit by a pitch in the second inning, was the Panthers’ only baserunner.

Kristi Fox (15-6) pitched a three-hitter and struck out four for the Panthers (19-9).

La Palma Kennedy 1, Thousand Oaks 0--Lisa Pitt’s home run led off the the eighth and ruined Jennifer Sharron’s bid for a perfect game and gave the Fighting Irish (18-6) an extra-inning victory.

Sharron (10-4) had nine strikeouts for the Lancers (16-9-1), who advanced runners to second in the third and fifth inning but failed to capitalize.

Westlake 1, Charter Oaks 0--Arin Carlson’s one-out single in the bottom of the eighth scored pinch-runner Stephanie Miller from third to carry the Warriors (23-6) past the Chargers in a game at Westlake.

Heather King singled to start the eighth and was replaced by Miller, who reached third on two passed balls.

Kelly DeArman (22-5) went the distance for the Warriors, allowing three hits, striking out nine and walking none. DeArman led off the second inning with a triple, one of the Warriors’ three hits.

Camarillo 3, San Marcos 0--Jefflyn Spahr had three hits and two runs batted in and Cindy Ball pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12, for the Scorpions (23-5-1) in a game at Camarillo.

Ball, a freshman, has 25 strikeouts in 13 innings in two playoff games. The Scorpions will play Mater Dei in the quarterfinals on Thursday at a site to be determined.

DIVISION III

Alemany 2, Riverside Poly 0--Esmeralda Macias had three hits and scored both runs in a game at Riverside Poly.

Sophie Contreraz pitched a one-hitter and her 18th shutout for Alemany (27-1). Angela Rivera added three hits and an RBI.

Redondo 2, Quartz Hill 0--Kerry Martin threw a no-hitter for Redondo (24-3) in a game at Quartz Hill.

Amber Slaton (4-1) struck out four and allowed five hits for Quartz Hill (10-15).

DIVISION V

La Reina 3, Calabasas 0--Jennifer Baltruzak slugged a two-run home run in the sixth and Jenny La Femina added an RBI single in the same inning for the Regents (22-5) in a game at Calabasas. Baltruzak (16-4) allowed four singles and struck out five.

Melissa Krolik (13-5) had two hits and struck out five for the Coyotes (15-6).

Moorpark 2, Pasadena Poly 1--Mindy Penrod drove in one run and scored on a wild pitch for the Musketeers in a game at Moorpark.

Oak Park 8, Big Bear 0--Kaylene Boldroff struck out five and walked two for the Eagles (17-9) in a game at Oak Park.

Boldroff added two hits, scored two runs and drove in another. Nicole West had three hits, scored a run and had one RBI for the Eagles.

Teammates Julie Jensen and Colleen McDonald each added two hits and one RBI for Oak Park.

Paraclete 5, Serrano 1--Erin Kirkpatrick had two hits and scored one run for the Diamondbacks (20-5) at Serrano.

La Canada 3, Paso Robles 0--The Spartans scored three runs on three hits in the fifth to defeat the Crimson in a game at Paso Robles. Lindsay Parker (22-3) struck out 10, walked none and allowed four singles.

Fillmore 8, Village Christian 0--Nicole Ortiz pitched a no-hitter for the visiting Flashes (16-5), striking out 11 and walking three.

Jackie Aranda (7-3) allowed six unearned runs in 4 2/3 innings for Village Christian (16-7), which committed eight errors.

DIVISION VI

Oakwood 7, Hillcrest Christian 1--Susie Vatz struck out 10, walked five and allowed three hits to lead the Gorillas in a game at Hillcrest Christian. Emily Frydych collected three hits and two RBIs for the Gorillas (12-5).

Cornerstone Christian 5, L.A. Lutheran 2--Karen Breshears (10-0) scattered three hits, striking out 10 and walking one for visiting Cornerstone Christian (19-0-1).

Julia Tamai had a leadoff home run in the third inning, then Michelle Maloney doubled in Kari Becker to put the Eagles on top, 3-1.
