Corona del Mar’s Gallagher Heads for Orange Coast

Erin Gallagher will leave Corona del Mar High to be the softball coach at Orange Coast, the college announced Tuesday.

Gallagher, softball coach at Corona del Mar the last two seasons, is an Orange Coast alumna. She was a two-time all-conference softball player (1978-79) for the Pirates. Gallagher also was the Orange Empire Conference cross-country champion in 1977.

She was an assistant coach at El Camino College in Torrance from 1985-88, and an assistant at East Los Angeles College in 1993 before taking over the Corona del Mar program.

Matt Braun and Vanessa Dahl of Golden West were selected athletes of the year, and Dave Ogas of Rancho Santiago and Don Watson of Orange Coast were selected coaches of the year in a poll of county sports information directors.

Braun won the South Coast Conference and Southern California MVP awards in water polo. He also is an accomplished swimmer.

Dahl was chosen the national junior college player of the year as well as the Orange Empire Conference player of the year. Ogas, in his 14th year as a head coach, guided Rancho Santiago to its first conference football title in 23 years.

Watson led the Orange Coast women’s swimming program to its seventh consecutive state title.

Orange Coast was the conference’s most successful athletic program for the 17th consecutive year, as the Pirates again finished first in the athletic supremacy point system.

OCC, which competes in 19 team sports, won the title with 164.5 points. Saddleback, which fields 16 teams, was second with 155.5 points after winding up fourth last year. They were followed by Riverside (154.5), Rancho Santiago (153.0) and Golden West (152.5).

Mike Hancock and Erin Remy of Orange Coast will compete in the U.S. community college track and field championships June 10 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

Hancock, who competes in the 1,500 meters, finished third in the State finals May 20 at Bakersfield with a time of 3:53.38. Remy finished third in the women’s 10,000 at Bakersfield in 39:54.9.
