SCC’s Seidel Named to NAIA All-American Team

Southern California College outfielder Ryan Seidel has been named to the American Baseball Coaches Assn.’s NAIA All-American baseball team, the NAIA announced Friday.

Seidel, a senior from Westlake Village, hit .376 this season with 13 homers and 39 runs batted in. He also hit 16 doubles and stole 33 bases.

Dallas Baptist designated hitter Jason Parsons, a senior from La Quinta High and Orange Coast College, received honorable mention.

Cypress High has named new coaches for boys’ volleyball and girls’ soccer.

Sam Semana, who has been an assistant varsity and junior varsity coach, will take over the boys’ volleyball program, Athletic Director John Selbe said Friday. Semana succeeds Stephanie Faris, who led Cypress to the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs after winning the Empire League title with an 8-0 record.

Ray Lange, an assistant soccer coach at the school last year, will succeed Lola Dominguez as girls’ soccer coach. Cypress won the Empire League soccer title for the first time last season and finished the year 15-4-3.

Lori Van Herk, an all-Orange Empire Conference forward at Cypress College, and Katie Kelley, a sweeper from Bethel High School in Bothell, Wash., have signed to play for the women’s soccer team at Southern California College, SCC Coach Scott Dameron said.

Van Herk, who attended Kennedy High, scored 12 goals and had nine assists this season at Cypress College. Kelley, a two-year captain, was an all-Cascade League selection at Bethel.

Ted Newland, UC Irvine water polo coach, has been inducted into the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Newland, who will begin his 30th season at Irvine next fall, is the winningest water polo coach in NCAA history with a 573-226-5 career record. At Irvine, his teams have competed in 21 NCAA tournaments.
