Plans are progressing for the inaugural Jeff Stenstrom Memorial golf tournament June 28 at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Proceeds from the event, developed by former El Toro High Principal Don Martin and other community members, will be used to establish a scholarship in Stenstrom’s name for the graduating El Toro High senior who best upholds the standards of citizenship, academics and athletics.

Stenstrom, a 1994 graduate of El Toro and a linebacker on the school’s football team, contracted fatal spinal meningitis two months ago while attending Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

The golf tournament will cost $150 per player and be a four-man scramble format. Entrance fee includes use of the driving range, golf cart rental, tee prizes and beverages on the course.

The driving range will open at 11:30 a.m. with tee-off time at 12:30 p.m.

A barbecue/awards dinner, with the Stenstrom family serving as hosts, will be at 6 p.m. with a raffle and auction. Spouses are invited to attend for an additional $20.

Stenstrom’s older brother, Steve Stenstrom, who played quarterback at El Toro and Stanford before being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, is expected to sign autographs.
