The condition of Reseda High softball player Rosie Yeatts improved from serious to stable on Wednesday. Yeatts suffered four fractured ribs and a ruptured spleen in an automobile accident May 31.

Danielle Roth, 14, who played with Yeatts on the Mid-Valley Magic travel team, was killed in the 5:20 p.m. collision at the corner of Tampa Avenue and Ingomar Street.

Reseda softball player Patricia Pena, who, along with Roth was a passenger in Yeatts’ car, suffered cuts and bruises and returned to school Monday.

“Dani was like a little sister to me,” Yeatts said. “Her big brother [Casey Roth] is one of my best friends.”

More than 700 people attended funeral services Saturday for Danielle Roth, who would have entered Notre Dame High this fall.

The Magic will host a tournament in Roth’s memory in August.

Travis Ferguson, starting setter for Cal State Northridge last season, has quit the team because he has grown weary of the sport, according to his father, Bob Ferguson.

Travis plans to get married next month and enroll next fall at Northridge’s Ventura campus, his father said.

Playing for his father, the Royal High coach, Travis was the Southern Section 3-A Division player of the year in 1992. He played the following season at UC San Diego before transferring to Northridge. After a redshirt year in ‘94, he won a starting position last season for the Matadors.

“It’s his decision and I’ve always supported Travis,” Bob Ferguson said. “But I always loved watching him play so I’ll miss that.”

Travis worked as an assistant at Royal for three seasons since graduating but has not decided whether he will continue coaching, his father said.

Trisha Moore, a reserve setter at San Jose State last season, will transfer to Cal State Northridge.

Moore is expected to back up Heather Hofmans, a starter at Long Beach State last season who also will transfer to Northridge.

Moore played a reserve role as San Jose State (23-12) lost to Northridge in the final of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

Baseball

Opening Day of the Golden State Baseball League has been delayed for the fourth time and is rescheduled for June 30.

Because franchises in Antelope Valley and Brawley were unable to have seats installed in time, league president Bob Weinstein ordered the delay.

Numerous attempts to launch the independent league, which was originally scheduled to begin with six teams in late May, have failed.

“I can’t deny the setbacks and the perception in the minds of some,” Weinstein said. “Once the first pitch is thrown all else will be forgotten and everyone will concentrate on the game.”

Catcher Chris Paxton of Palmdale High has signed with the Baltimore Orioles, forgoing a scholarship to Cal State Northridge.

Paxton, who was drafted in the 45th round of the major league amateur draft earlier this month, received money for college tuition and an undisclosed signing bonus.

He will report next week to Sarasota, Fla., site of the Orioles’ rookie-level Gulf Coast League team.

Third baseman Gabe Kapler of Moorpark College has signed with the Detroit Tigers, who drafted him in the 57th round.

Vicente, 6-3 and 275 pounds, was selected to The Times’ All-Valley team and helped the Braves reach the City Section 3-A championship game.

Northridge also signed 6-6 quarterback Josh Fiske and wide receiver Scott Chapman, All-Los Padres League picks from Santa Ynez High.
