Moore Advances to Quarterfinals

Ryan Moore of Fullerton advanced to the quarterfinal round Thursday by beating B.K. Chang of Orange, 6-4, 6-4, in the boys’ 16 division at the Southern California Junior Sectional at Neal Machander Tennis Center in Santa Ana.
Moore, who is top-seeded in the division, will play Marcin Kosakowski of Downey, who upset fifth-seeded Brandon Fallon of Dana Point, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Fifth-seeded Joseph Gilbert of Fullerton beat Robert Williams of Los Angeles to advance in the boys’ 18 division. Bret Hankey of Huntington Beach and Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach also advanced.
In the boys’ 14 division, Taylor Dent of Newport Harbor was the only county player to advance; he beat Cody Jackson of Westminster, 6-2, 6-2.
Eighth-seeded Brandi Freudenberg of Orange, who beat Gee Gee Gavin of Vista, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1, joined Natalie Exon of Irvine, who defeated Elana Gold of La Jolla, 6-2, 7-6, to advance to the quarterfinals in the girls’ 18 division.
Third-seeded Faye DeVera of Villa Park beat Bethany Bogart of San Diego, 6-3, 7-5, in the 16 division.
Susanna Linghan, April Kojian and Kin-Anh Nguyen of Santa Ana advanced in the 12 division.

The California All-Stars beat the Georgia All-Stars, 12-7, in the second of two games but lost to Texas in the first game Thursday at the Sunbelt High School All-Star Classic at Oklahoma Baptist College in Shawnee, Okla.
In the second game, Brian Oliver of Antioch High, who went two for two, hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to put California ahead.
Tournament-leader Texas scored five runs in the first inning of the first game. Craig Kuzmic of La Quinta homered for California.

Rocky Biddle of Long Beach State has been named to the Baseball America Freshman All-American team. He was among five pitchers selected. Outfielder C.J. Ankrum, who hit .352 for Cal State Fullerton’s national champions, was named to the second team.
