Northridge Signs Two Kennedy Baseball Players

Kennedy High catcher Kevin Serr and outfielder Terrmel Sledge have signed letters of intent to play at Cal State Northridge next season.

Serr hit a three-run homer in the City Section 4-A final at Dodger Stadium to give the Golden Cougars the title this season.

Sledge batted .422 and drove in 38 runs.

“If you don’t go all out you’re not going to play for Coach Bill Kernen and I like that,” Sledge said. “Plus, they play a lot of the top teams around.”

Andy Wilson, an Oxnard College outfielder who missed most of the past season with a broken wrist, has accepted a scholarship offer from Arkansas, Oxnard Coach Chris Stevens said.

Wilson, a former Thousand Oaks High standout, had 22 hits in 42 at-bats when he was injured in Oxnard’s 12th game.

After four delays, the four-team Golden State Baseball League is scheduled to open Saturday.

The Antelope Valley Ravens will start right-hander Mike Weinstein in the opener of a four-game series at Imperial Valley.

Pitcher Travis Allen, 14, of Lancaster, has been selected to play for the United States in the Youth Pan American Games, to be held Aug. 13-24 in Saltillo, Mexico.

Buckley Coach Dan Gilmartin will take on the dual responsibility of athletic director on July 1.

Golf

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys is the lone area golfer remaining in the California Amateur Championships at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Steinberg defeated Mitch Harrison of Acampo on the 19th hole of the match-play tournament and advances to today’s quarterfinals.

Valencia’s Jason Gore was eliminated by South Pasadena’s Jeff Sanday on the 17th hole and Ken Weixel of Calabasas lost on the 13th hole.

Bob Hatfield and Richard Grommes won the Tomahawk Classic this week at the Saticoy Country Club. The duo shot a tournament-record 68 in the opening round of the best-ball format.

Track and Field

Jason Medearis of Wyoming, Kris McLucas of Ventura College and Jocelyn Chase of UCLA head the list of local entries in the USA Track & Field junior (age 14-19) championships that start today at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Medearis, a former Hart High standout who just completed his freshman season at Wyoming, is entered in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles and the 400 intermediates.

McLucas, the state junior college champion in the intermediates, is entered in the same events.

Chase, a former standout at Agoura High, will compete in the women’s pole vault.

Crescenta Valley’s Phil Gonzalez (men’s 5,000), Buena’s Stacy Hebert (women’s 400 low hurdles) and Palmdale’s Kadrina Coffee (women’s 400) are the top local high school entrants.

Francisco Sandoval, a recent graduate of Channel Islands High and the fifth-place finisher in the 1994 Ventura County cross-country championships, will attend UC Davis on a full academic scholarship.

A concert to raise funds for the West Valley Eagles track club and a new all-weather track at Pierce College will be held at Culver Studios in Culver City at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Basketball

Tony Kent, an assistant coach at Cornell for the past two seasons, has been hired as a graduate assistant for the Cal Lutheran men’s team.

Kent, 25, replaces Alan Major, who has been hired as restricted-earnings coach at the University of Pacific.
