David Tuizer ruined what would have been a great night for Newhall players in the American Legion baseball District 20 All-Star game Tuesday night at Burroughs High.

Tuizer’s two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the East team a 7-6 victory against the West.

Tuizer was the only representative in the game from North Hollywood East. All-star representation was based on the standings, so Newhall, which has a 17-1 record, had four players in the game, all of whom were starters.

First baseman Aaron Dean, who has nine home runs this season, hit a grand slam in the fourth, giving the West a 6-0 lead.

Dean, a left-handed batter, was licking his chops when he saw the 275-foot marker in right field. And when Julio Sandoval of San Fernando grooved a 2-1 fastball, Dean crushed a home run onto the football field.

It was an all-around great night for Dean, who also won $40 in a raffle.

Newhall right-hander Chris Baker started for the West and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four. Until Tuizer’s home run, he was set to pick up the victory.

Another Newhall starter, center fielder Jeremy Siepel had a single in two at-bats.

The East came back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth against Central Valley’s 6-foot-7 right-hander Mike Schultz. Sepulveda’s Eli Reichline, Encino’s Andy Campanella, Burbank South’s Devin Grace and Van Nuys East’s Robbie Brewster drove in the runs.

Schultz helped them by walking two batters and hitting another.

West Hills pitcher Chris Gray relieved Schultz in the fourth and got out of the jam with the West clinging to a two-run lead.

But the rest of the game was dominated by the East’s relief pitchers.

Sunland-Tujunga’s Kyle Spielbuehler pitched three scoreless innings from the sixth through the eighth. He allowed only one hit and struck out four.

East reliever Phil Onsaga of Verdugo Hills struck out the side in the top of the ninth, giving his offense one more chance.

Spielbuehler doubled with one out in the ninth. Grace, running for Spielbuehler, then scored on a two-base error by Van Nuys West shortstop Angel Barajas.

Tuizer then ripped a ball over the right-center field fence to win the game.

Valley South’s Fernando Centeno had two hits for the East. Central Valley’s Adrian Torres had an infield single and a double for the West.

Valley South’s Japanese sensation Taiki Yamaoka started the game on the mound for the East. He gave up two unearned runs in the only inning he was scheduled to pitch.

Onsaga picked up the victory for the East.
