Tennis Players Advance in Age-Group Tournament

Unseeded Tom Wire of Westlake Village and sixth-seeded Gene Malin of Woodland Hills advanced to the semifinals of the United States Tennis Assn. National 45 Hardcourt Championships at Westlake Tennis and Swim Club.

Wire advanced to the semifinal of the 45-and-older tournament by default over second-seeded Peter Bronson. Malin defeated fourth-seeded Steven Cornell, 7-6, 7-6.

Doug Ruffin of Olympia, Wash., and top-seeded Brian Cheney of Chandler, Ariz, also made the semifinals.

Wilson Sporting Goods Co. has selected Wayne Bryan of Camarillo as pro of the year.

Bryan, teaching pro at Cabrillo Racquet Club in Somis since its inception in 1971, has guided one of the state’s top training programs for juniors.

Jason Cook of Woodland Hills, Nick Varvais of Simi Valley and twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo have been selected to represent the Southern California Tennis Assn. in the 1995 junior tennis national team tournament.

The SCTA is two-time defending champion of the United States Tennis Assn. Intersectional Team Championships, a showdown of the nation’s 16 sections to be held at the University of South Carolina, July 30-Aug. 2.

Free 90-minute lessons will be offered at 12 area sites today through July 28 for beginning tennis players.

Lessons will be given at the following locations, which should be contacted for reservations: Cabrillo Racquet Club in Somis, Westlake Tennis & Swim Club, Moranda Park Tennis Complex in Port Hueneme, Oxnard Tennis Club, ATC Thousand Trails in Acton, Burbank Tennis Club, Cal State Northridge, Northridge Tennis Club, Summit South in Valencia, The Glen in Newhall and the Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills.

Water Polo

J.J. Arden and Albert Won, who will be seniors at Harvard-Westlake this year, have been selected to the U.S. junior national team.

Basketball

Kathy Pudelko, head coach of the women’s team at Glendale College, is running a camp for girls 11 and older.

Sarah Morgan, a sophomore at Notre Dame High, has been selected to the United States Olympic Development Team.

Football

Montclair Prep finished first among 15 schools in an ironman contest at Glendale High. The Mounties finished with 25 points, three ahead of St. John Bosco after competing in seven lifting and field events.
