Long Beach Team

Peter King’s column, “Swimming With the Barracuda” (July 30), was a solid disappointment. I chanced upon a story about this local team and attended the first of what was to become many games. King makes the Long Beach baseball team--and Chris Gibbs--out to be whiny, business-poor losers without any support. To the contrary, my friends and I have experienced wholesome, enthusiastic crowds supporting a clean, hard-working team. There are no drugs, no gangs, no hecklers--except those of the good-natured variety--and no hassles. The parking is well-lit and convenient; the fans are a delight.

At 34 years of age, I never thought I’d be clamping my outstretched arms together, chanting “Cuda! Cuda! Cuda!” but I did, and it was fun. I’ve met physicians, divers, little kids and even the great Barracuda himself. This is the sort of entertainment which ought to be promoted. Families are treated to a healthy outing together, one which is stress-free and inexpensive.

Perhaps if King attended a few more games, he’d find himself becoming addicted like me . . . and I don’t even like baseball!
