Four Hits by Cope Fuel Conejo Valley’s Little League Victory

Ryan Cope was four for five and drove in three runs as Conejo Valley defeated Aiea of Oahu, Hawaii, 17-14, in an elimination game of the Little League Senior Division (ages 14-15) Western Regional championships at Piner High in Santa Rosa on Tuesday.

Conejo Valley (16-3) lost to Aiea, 8-4, in its tournament opener Sunday, but beat Green Valley, Nev., 3-1, on Monday on Dave Perry’s four-hitter.

Conejo Valley plays unbeaten Morada of Stockton today, and if Conejo Valley is victorious, the same teams would play for the tournament title Thursday.

Cope led a 20-hit Conejo Valley attack Tuesday. B.J. Hebert (five RBIs), Perry (four RBIs), Jeff Wyly, Kevin Mitchell and Dan Greene each had two hits.

Track and Field

Distance runner John Greene, long-triple jumper Tremarri Limbrick and pole vaulter Joshua Morton have made commitments to Cal State Northridge.

Greene was runner-up in the 1994 Southern Section Division II cross-country championships for Agoura High and placed third in the State Division II meet. He has a best of 9 minutes 20.1 seconds in the 3,200 meters and placed seventh in the Southern Section Division I finals.

Limbrick posted bests of 22 feet 11 inches in the long jump and 45-4 3/4 in the triple jump for Pasadena Muir. He placed third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump in the Southern Section Division I championships.

Morton cleared 15-6 in the pole vault for Sonora High of the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Football

Defensive back Jason Ascencio and running backs Eric Richardson and Roger Bausley have transferred from Granada Hills High through open enrollment to play football for other area schools.

Ascencio and Richardson have enrolled at Kennedy.

Bausley is at San Fernando.

Tennis

Hopes of a repeat Valley champion in the Unites States Tennis Assn. National Junior Championships in girls’ 18-and-under singles have faded when sixth-seeded Erin Boisclair of Agoura Hills was upset in the first round Sunday. Two others also were eliminated from the main draw at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose.

Meilen Tu of Northridge won the tournament last year.

Bea Bielik of Valley Stream, N.Y. scored a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Boisclair, who has since won three matches in the consolation draw, including two Tuesday.

Boisclair, 15, on Tuesday beat Kelly Brown of Buffalo, N.Y., 6-2, 6-2, and Leigh Eichelberger of Center Valley, Pa., 6-4, 6-2.

Also still alive in the consolation is Brandis Braverman of Encino, who won her second and third matches in the back draw against Jennifer Lutgert of Western Springs, Ill., and Catherine Galvin of Wading River, N.Y., each by scores of 6-1, 6-1.

Monique Allegre of Camarillo, the only local first-round winner in girls’ 18s, was eliminated in her second consolation match by her doubles partner, Brandi Freudenberg of Orange, 6-2, 6-2.

Those still alive in the main draw included Mike Bryan of Camarillo and Nicholas Weiss of Tarzana.

Bryan defeated Steve Millerman of New York, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16 in the boys’ 18 singles tournament Kalamazoo, Mich.

Weiss defeated Neil Berman of Muttontown, N.Y., 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the boys’ 14 tournament in San Antonio, Tex.

Joe Edelberg of Agoura was a second-round loser.

In other boys’ 18 matches, Justin O’Neal of Lima, Ohio, defeated Bob Bryan of Camarillo, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). Top-seeded Justin Gimelstob of Roseland, N.J. defeated Jason Cook of Woodland Hills, 6-2, 6-0.

Mike and Bob Bryan, seeded third in doubles, defeated Joey Gilbert of Fullerton and Kelly Gullett of Whittier, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.

Darian Chappell of Camarillo was eliminated from the girls’ 16 tournament in San Diego.

Bowling

Hobo Boothe of Canoga Park is among the early leaders of the $150,000 Showboat Invitational PBA Senior Tournament at Showboat Lanes in Las Vegas.

Boothe is seventh after 16 games with a pin fall total of 3,506. Allan Chodor of Canoga Park is 12th (3,449) and Barry Gurney of West Hills (3,371), who last week won the Rockey Mountain Senior Classic in Littleton, Colo., is tied for 32nd.

Swimming

The Buena High girls’ team is ranked sixth in the high school 1994-95 team rankings compiled by Swimming World Magazine. Team points were awarded based on a combination of individual team members’ best times in certain events.

Miscellany

The Los Angeles Ice Dogs, an International Hockey League team, is holding cheerleader auditions on Sunday at Yankee Doodles in Woodland Hills.
