Highlights
For the second consecutive season, Foothill shook off a poor nonleague performance to win the league title. The Knights lost four consecutive games after beating Tustin in the opener. But they rolled through league play, getting four of their five victories by 20 or more points. Foothill clinched the title when Cody Clemmons kicked a 21-yard field goal with 32 seconds left to edge Orange, 15-14. Foothill reached the semifinals of the Southern Section Division V playoffs, losing to eventual champion Newport Harbor, 13-10, in overtime. Villa Park lost to finalist Servite, 7-0, in the second round. Canyon was edged in the first round by Loara, 10-9. Santa Ana Valley’s Dwayne Cherrington was named offensive player of the year. Villa Park linebacker Tony D’Amato was named defensive player of the year. D’Amato, Greg Jacobs (Canyon) and Tony Tuioti (Foothill) were Times’ all-county selections.
