Pacifica Shuts Down Woodbridge’s Makeshift Offense

Pacifica’s defense recorded six sacks en route to a 17-0 nonleague victory over Woodbridge in the season opener for both schools Thursday night at Irvine High.

The Mariners held Woodbridge to minus-six yards rushing and allowed the Warriors only 41 yards passing.

Woodbridge played without junior quarterback Brian Millat, who was scheduled to start. Millat suffered a stress fracture of his left foot during practice Tuesday, Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said.

Millat, who started three games last season, is expected to be out four to five weeks. He was replaced Thursday by senior Ricky Jenkins, a wide receiver.

Jenkins, in his first start at quarterback, was under constant pressure from Pacifica’s defensive line. He completed four of 14 passes for 41 yards and had two passes intercepted.

Pacifica quarterback J.D. Stern fared slightly better, completing five of 17 passes for 60 yards with one interception.

Senior running back Chris Hamm led Pacifica with 59 yards on 10 carries.

The Mariners took a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal by senior Craig Chow with 7:23 left in the first quarter.

They used a fake punt to set up their next score in the third quarter. On a fourth-down play at the Woodbridge 43, junior Verdell Le Veaux faked the punt and ran five yards for a first down.

Three plays later, junior Paul Toepel scored from 12 yards to put Pacifica ahead, 10-0, with 3:04 left in the third quarter.

Pacifica moved ahead, 17-0, on Hamm’s 10-yard run with 3:14 left in the game. The closest Woodbridge came to scoring was on its last drive of the game, when it reached Pacifica’s 14.

On a fourth-down play, Ryan McGuinness hauled in a pass from Jenkins, but he was out of the end zone when her caught the ball.
