COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOOTBALL ’95 / Mission Conference : RIVERSIDE

Share

1994 RECORDS: 4-6 overall, 3-3 in the division.

COACH: Barry Meier (record at Riverside, 95-60-1)

RETURNING STARTERS: Three on offense, four on defense.

OUTLOOK: Meier starts the year needing five victories to become the 17th coach in community college history to win at least 100 games. To get there, Meier is changing offensive formations to the Wing T, which was all the rage 40 years ago. The Tigers are switching from the veer because so many of their area high schools run the Wing-T, which features backs going in different directions. Meier figures it will help ease players’ transition from high school to community college football. The offensive line will be led by Coleman Johnson, a redshirt freshman who transferred from Colorado. Sophomore Geoff Bond and freshman Brent Meier, Barry’s son, are battling for the quarterback spot. The Tigers lost their top six rushers from last season, but freshman Robert Thomas leads a talented group of first-year running backs. Mickey Grims, a freshman wide receiver, is most likely the fastest player on the team and also will return punts and kickoffs. Riverside should be solid along the defensive line with Gene David, Ken Morris and Tim Hubbard returning. Derrick Rogers, who Meier said is the best outside linebacker Riverside has had in 16 years, is the defensive leader. He has gained 20 pounds since last season and is at 225. Sammy Young, a transfer from Arizona State, will start at one inside linebacker spot. Ian White is the top defensive back. Tobin Anderson returns at kicker after making 14 of 16 field-goal attempts and all 14 of his extra-point tries. Riverside starts the season Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at San Bernardino Valley.
