PREP FOOTBALL ’95 / CAMINO REAL LEAGUE

Share

Things got easier when Harvard-Westlake last season moved from the Division III Mission League to Division IX. The Wolverines swept their league schedule and advanced to the semifinals, losing to Atascadero, 34-6. Harvard also defeated Southern Section Division III champion Notre Dame, 14-10, in a nonleague game. . . . Harvard is a consensus pick to repeat. Running back Abed Abusaleh (6 feet 2, 202 pounds), who rushed for 857 yards and 11 touchdowns in eight games, is poised for a strong campaign after battling a shoulder injury for much of last season. . . . Quarterback Merlin DeMartinis, an all-league defensive back, logged a significant number of snaps as a backup. . . . Two-way tackle Fred Li (6-0, 233) “is probably the best lineman I’ve ever coached,” Coach Dave Bennett said. . . . St. Anthony should pose the biggest challenge to Harvard. Quarterback John Zak and running back Eric Reese are back. . . . Verbum Dei has several returning defensive players. . . . Cantwell-Sacred Heart and St. Monica were hit hard by graduation.
