PREP FOOTBALL ’95 / NORTHWEST VALLEY CONFERENCE : North Valley League : CITY SECTION

Share

FACTS AND FIGURES: San Fernando quarterback Keijuan Douglas transferred to Littlerock last spring, then came back to the Tigers over the summer. Seven other potential Tiger starters are transfers. . . . Douglas and El Camino Real’s Shaun Fishman are the only two returning starters at quarterback in the conference. . . . The top two returning rushers from 1994, Antwane Smith and Eric Richardson, are at Kennedy. Richardson transferred from Granada Hills this summer. . . . Two new coaches, Birmingham’s Dave Lertzman, from Monroe, and Granada Hills’ Brad Ratcliff, from University, coached other City Section schools as recently as 1992.

LAST YEAR: Taft rolled through the regular season before losing to Dorsey in the 4-A quarterfinals on the final play of the game. . . . Granada Hills quarterback Brian MacLean was second in the area in passing with 2,227 yards and 19 touchdowns.

KEY RETURNERS: Kennedy: Antwane Smith, tailback; Damion Thompson, linebacker; Karalus Doyle, cornerback; Waking Bailey, safety; Jason Ascencio, tight end/defensive back. El Camino Real: Jeff Macrea, fullback/linebacker. Taft: Clay Carter, linebacker/fullback; Antwan Simpson, linebacker.

OUTLOOK: If junior quarterback Calvin Zinck avoids mistakes, Kennedy has enough talent to do well in the 4-A playoffs. . . . Taft is relying on a talented group of sophomores to extend its success of the past three seasons. Sophomores Sedric Hurns and Donald Carpenter get first shot at replacing Jerry Brown at tailback. . . . San Fernando has enough speedy backs and experienced linemen to switch to a wishbone offense, resembling the formation run in 1993 with All-City quarterback Leon Blunt. Blunt’s brother, Jonathan Campbell, has a slight edge over Douglas to direct the Tiger attack. . . . Faced with the transfer of six top players, Ratcliff is in for a tough first season at Granada Hills. . . . El Camino Real has nowhere to go but up. The Conquistadores need help from five players from the baseball team that reached the City Section 4-A semifinals this spring.
