Jermaine Lewis and the Antelope Valley High football team picked up in 1995 where they left off in 1994.

The Antelopes defeated Hesperia, 63-13, Friday night in a nonleague game at Antelope Valley.

Lewis, who played only the first half, scored on runs of one and two yards, and the defending Southern Section Division II champions extended their winning streak to 10 games over two seasons.

“We just had more team speed and overall athleticism than they did,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said. “We have four real good tailbacks.”

The Antelopes certainly spread the fun around. Ten players scored, the team never punted and none of its nine scoring drives lasted more than five plays.

The demolition started early, when Hesperia’s conservative, double wing-T offense stalled after seven plays. On the eighth, the Scorpions attempted to punt from their 32. The snap sailed over punter Cory Moen’s head and he kicked it out of the end zone for an Antelope Valley safety.

Antelope Valley took the ensuing kick and drove 46 yards in four plays, the touchdown coming on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Bobby Brown to tight end Milton Wynn.

Hesperia punted after running only three plays on its next possession, and Antelope Valley needed just four snaps before Lewis scored from one yard.

Hesperia managed seven plays before punting again. Antelope Valley’s Tony Walker returned the kick for an apparent touchdown, but the play was called back because of an Antelope clipping penalty.

No matter. The Antelopes simply took the ball at the Hesperia 36-yard line and in three plays produced another score when Brown passed to Trymon Redick in the end zone from 32 yards. The Antelopes led, 23-0, with 9:29 to play in the second quarter.

Lewis’ second scoring run and a 10-yard scoring run by Hesperia’s Joe Gooden produced a 30-6 halftime score.

In the second half, Hesperia recovered Justin Reinier’s fumble on the Antelope 37. Eight plays later, on fourth and goal at the Antelope Valley four, Robert Vincent fumbled, and defensive back Tony Walker recovered and returned it 96 yards.

Reinier, Dominee Martin, Ken Nelson and Dominick Cribbs all ran for touchdowns in the second half.

Lewis finished with 54 yards in 10 carries. Nelson had 77 yards in only three carries.
